WACO, Texas -- No. 9 Baylor men's tennis used an efficient effort to beat Utah 4-1, and stretch its win streak to five straight, on Thursday night at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Baylor (17-7, 4-1 Big 12 Conference) cruised to the doubles point with wins on court 2 and 3 vs. Utah (5-14, 1-5 Big 12), and then finished off the win with wins on court 2, 4 and 5.
The win marked a fifth straight win for the Bears, who have now won 12 straight at the Hurd Tennis Center.
The Bears started strong in doubles with Devin Badenhorst and Blake Anderson defeated AJ Deem and Charles Frey 6-4, followed closely by Zsombor Velcz and Calvin Baierl with a 6-3 win.
The Utes responded during singles, taking the first point with Simeon Terziev defeating No. 34 Connor van Schalkwyk 6-2, 6-2 on court 3, but the Bears didn't let them stay tied for long. Louis Bowden dominated his match against Charles Frey 6-1, 6-1 to take the lead back for the Bears.
Luc Koeing secured another point for Baylor, defeating Balthazar Huss 7-5, 6-3 to bring the score to 3-1. No. 39 Velcz won the final point for the Bears, securing the match 7-5, 6-4 on court 2.
"It's never easy to win in the Big 12," Baylor men's tennis coach Michael Woodson said. "That's the biggest takeaway. Utah has good players and they can compete. We had some bright spots out there and some guys who will benefit from the experience of competing without their best energy. We have a full day ahead on Saturday and we need to be ready to compete in a doubleheader that will include a night match against BYU."
Baylor will host Midwestern State at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center in the first of a doubleheader. Baylor hosts No. 67 BYU at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
