All-American Tiriah Kelley running her first outdoor 200 meters
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Baylor All-American Tiriah Kelley, limited to relays and a 100-meter race that produced a career PR, will make her outdoor 200-meter debut at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational that begins Friday at James G. Pressly Stadium.
The bronze medalist in the 200 at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Kelley ran a 11.27 clocking in the 100 meters at last Friday's Baylor Invitational, finishing second behind Adidas-sponsored pro runner Cambrea Sturgis.
"She'll open up in the 200 this week," Baylor coach Michael Ford said, "because she doesn't have a national mark yet in that event."
Baylor is taking a limited roster of 17 men and 16 women to Florida, including the nationally ranked pole-vaulting trio of Tenly Kuhn, Molly Haywood and Alencia Lentz, while distance coach David Barnett is traveling with eight athletes to the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa, Calif.
"This is like a mini-national meet," Ford said of the Tom Jones Memorial, which includes 13 Top 25 women's teams and 11 on the men's side. "I would say this is probably our biggest and hardest competition on paper going into the season. Definitely looking forward to seeing how we line up against some of the nation's best teams."
Kelley will be joined by freshmen Alyssa Jones and Success Oyibu in the 200 meters and is scheduled to run on the Bears' 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays.
In California, Ruth Kimeli will run the 10,000 meters "to try to get a mark in for the (NCAA) West prelims," Ford said. Also running are Ella Perry, Evanna Jacobsen, Mackenize Browne and Rickeisha Simms in the 1,500, Brown and Simms in the 800, Jacobsen in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Perry in the 5,000 meters.
On the men's side, Aiden Ramshaw and Jack Sterrett are entered in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters, while Amon Malakwen will run the 800 and 1,500.
Live results for the Florida meet are available at Tom Jones Memorial. Friday's running schedule begins with the women's 200-meter invite at 4 p.m. CT.
Next weekend, the Bears will host 16 other teams for the Michael Johnson Invitational April 24-25 at Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium.
