Signee Robert Miller wins 400 hurdles, earns spot on U20 team
Competing in national championships at various spots around the globe, Baylor track and field won three gold medals and also brought home one silver and a pair of bronze medals this weekend.
At the Jamaican Championships, held at the National Stadium in Kingston, junior All-American Demario Prince won the 110-meter hurdles in a season-best time of 13.13 that was just one hundredth of a second off the career PR he set at this same meet a year ago.
Arkansas' Jerome Campbell (13.35) and Clemson's Sharvis Simmonds (13.39) finished 2-3 in Sunday's Jamaican finals in a rematch of a semifinal heat at the NCAA Championship earlier this month in Eugene, Ore.
Prince earns a spot for the Jamaican team at the Commonwealth Games, which will be held July 27-Aug. 1 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Baylor signee Robert Miller turned in a career-best time of 49.96 in the 400-meter hurdles – his first sub-50.0-second clocking – to win the Jamaican U20 championship. He advances to the U20 World Championship that will be held Aug. 5-9 at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Fifth in the 400 meters a year ago, Baylor senior Aren Spencer placed third in the 200 meters at the Barbados National Championships at the Usain Bolt Complex in Bridgetown. The defending champion in the 100 and 200, 27-year-old pro Kuron Griffith won the 200 finals in 20.53, followed by Armani Knight (20.83) and Spencer in a career PR of 21.06.
Signee Rebekah Jhade-Garrett from Phoenix, Ariz., had a busy weekend, finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles at the USA U20 Championship in a career PR of 13.19 before winning the event at the Nike Nationals High School division in 13.28, both at Hayward Field.
At the USA U20 Championship in Eugene, freshman Jada Edwards finished seventh in the women's 200 meters in 23.80 and freshman Kingston Williams was 11th in the men's decathlon with a career-high 6,794 points. Williams had new career bests of 14.12 in the 110-mter hurdles and 38-3 ½ in the shot put and matched his previous best in the high jump of 6-3 ¼.
Sophomore Janae De Gannes, a two-time NCAA Championship qualifier in the long jump, finished second in the long jump (20-4 ½) and fourth in the 100 meters (11.39) at the Trinidad and Tobago Senior Championships at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain.
Baylor will have a host of athletes, past and present, competing at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships July 23-26 at historic Icahn Stadium in New York.
