Baylor men sweep 4x100, 4x400 relays at Baylor Invitational
BAYLOR INVITATIONAL RESULTS
WACO, Texas – Not only did the threatening weather hold off, Baylor track and field won six event titles at Friday's Baylor Invitational at Clyde Hart Stadium, highlighted by a program record from Serafima Lucero in the 400-meter hurdles, a 1-2-3 finish in the women's pole vault and the men sweeping the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Lucero, who hadn't run a 400 hurdles race in almost a year before last week's Texas Relays, blew away her previous best in the event by nearly two full seconds with a time of 55.93 seconds that broke Calisha Taylor's record of 55.94 that was set at last year's NCAA West Prelims.
"She's been training really well," Baylor coach Michael Ford said of Lucero, who finished 16th in last week's Texas Relays with a time of 58.75. "I'm just going to say, the Texas Relays was just an off race. She hadn't run the 400 hurdles since last April. She was just really rusty. But training-wise, she looked like she was ready to run low 56 to 55 high. But that was impressive."
That also moved Lucero up to No. 8 on the NCAA Division I list and second in the Big 12, behind only Texas Tech's Vanessa Baide (55.82).
For the second time in as many home meets, Baylor went 1-2-3 in the women's pole vault. Only this time, it was senior Tenly Kuhn winning with a new career PR of 14 feet, 10 ¼ inches that ranks second nationally.
After clearing a season-best 14-6 ¼ on her third and final attempt, Kuhn did the same thing and nailed down the event title with her last try at 14-10 ¼. Attempting to break teammate Molly Haywood's school record, Kuhn just barely brushed the bar on her last attempt at 15-1 ¾.
"That was only the second time I've ever attempted a 15-foot bar before," Kuhn said. "I think it's close, and I'm super excited for these next few meets so that I can finally get it."
Losing for the first time outdoors, Haywood was second at 14-6 ¼, followed by Alencia Lentz in third at 14-2 ½.
"We're all really close, so it's never cutthroat," Kuhn said of the three vaulters, who all rank in the top 10 nationally. "We all want each other to do super good, so I love that about our team."
One of the more impressive performances of the day came in the opening running event, when the Baylor men went 1-2 in the 4x100-meter relay. In a wire-to-wire race, the Bears' "A" team of Austen Diggs, Laurenz Colbert, Ricquan Graham and Bailey Hashmi clipped off a time of 39.86 to narrowly edge the "B" team of Sebastian Berntsen, Malik Franklin, Aren Spencer and Brian Limage (39.94).
"I thought the 4x100s ran really well, considering we kind of mixed them up a little bit," Ford said. "But that just gave us a little more depth. For us to have two teams run under 40 (seconds), that's impressive."
Initially disqualified, the Baylor women's 4x100 relay of Tiriah Kelley, Hannah Lowe, Jada Edwards and Royaltee Brown finished third in a season-best time of 43.85. The Bears' "B" team was actually DQ'ed for running out of the passing zone.
Kelley came back to finish second overall and first among collegians with a PR time of 11.27 in the 100 meters that ranks 10th nationally. Two-time NCAA national champion Cambrea Sturgis, sponsored by Adidas, won the event in 11.18, with former Baylor All-American Alexis Brown fourth in 11.38.
Sturgis completed her personal sweep by winning the 200 meters in 22.09, with Baylor freshman Success Oyibu finishing fourth with a PR time of 22.99.
The Baylor women also picked up wins from Sydney Smith in the high jump and LSU transfer Addison Stevenson, who held off TCU's Camryn Kirkland to win the 3,000 meters in 10:18.68.
Finishing off the day, the Baylor men's 4x400 relay of Tyler Honeyman, Diggs, Colbert and Hashmi held off TCU again and won the last event of the meet with a time of 3:08.54.
"Thank God, one, for the weather," Ford said. "The forecast didn't look great going in, but I thought it turned out for the best. Overall, I was really pleased. Thank you to the crowd that came out for the meet. And now, we'll get ready for the Tom Jones meet (next week in Florida)."
Traveling out of state for the first time in the outdoor season, the Bears will compete in the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational next Friday and Saturday in Gainesville, Fla., before returning home to host the Michael Johnson Invitational on April 24-25.
