BU unable to hold lead against Cougars
HOUSTON – Baylor men's basketball went toe-to-toe with one of the Big 12's top teams for a half, but No. 7 Houston pulled away after the break to hand the Bears a 77-64 loss Wednesday night at the Fertitta Center.
Baylor (15-15, 5-12 Big 12) built an early 10-point lead and shot 48-percent in the opening half, including 7-of-14 from three-point range, before Houston closed the gap late to send the game into halftime tied at 35-35.
Houston (25-5, 13-4 Big 12) took control in the second half, shooting 55-percent from the floor and using a 15-0 run midway through the period to build separation. The Cougars outscored Baylor 42-29 after the break.
Tounde Yessoufou led Baylor with 20 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for the first double-double of his collegiate career, while Caden Powell added 12 points. Obi Agbim and Cameron Carr chipped in 11 points each, with Carr knocking down three three-pointers and grabbing seven rebounds.
THE RUNDOWN
In a packed Fertitta Center, the Bears started out the game hot with a 6-0 run over a minute-and-a-half span to open the night and force a Houston timeout in just the first three minutes. With the help of two deep balls from Agbim and Car, BU put up a 12-5 lead against the Cougars at the first media timeout.
Out of the break, Yessoufou got on the board with a deep-two ball, and with his second three-pointer of the night, Carr extended the Bears' lead to 10 points, 19-9.
Agbim snapped a four-minute scoring drought where the Cougars forced four turnovers with his second bucket from beyond the arc, 22-14.
The Bears kept rolling from deep, but Houston kept its foot on the pedal and did not let up. With three minutes remaining in the first half, the Cougars made it a one-possession game, but a Yessoufou three kept the advantage.
Houston slammed down a dunk to respond and get the crowd loud, followed by going to the foul line and sinking both free throws with five seconds left to tie the game. With fouls to give, Houston was able to hold off the Bears and keep the game tied at half, 35-35.
Out of the half, Agbim wasted no time and nailed his third three-pointer to give him double-figures on the night. However, Houston was quick to respond, holding BU to no field goals and scoring a drought of over two minutes. At the under-16 media timeout, UH trailed by just one point.
A Cougar deep-three by Emanuel Sharp tied it back up, but the Bears kept pushing with Yessoufou sinking a jumper and giving the lead back to the Bears. The freshman proved to be a force for BU, earning the first double-double of his collegiate career and leading the Bears, 54-50.
A clutch slam dunk by Powell brought him to double-figures, the fourth Bear with 10-plus points, and kept BU with its four-point lead at the under-eight media timeout, 58-54.
Out of the timeout, five quick points by the Cougars gave them their first lead of the game. Houston continued a 13-2 run over three minutes to go up 64-58 after BU dropped the lead.
The Houston offense found its fire while holding BU to a scoring drought, building its advantage to 11 points, 72-61.
That was enough for the Cougars defend their home court and take the win, 77-64.

Baylor will take on Utah at Foster Pavilion for its final regular season game of the season and honor its seniors for Senior Night on Saturday, March 7th at 4 p.m. CT.
