Meet will include video tribute to the legendary Baylor coach after his passing
WACO, Texas – Baylor track and field will open its home schedule this weekend with the Clyde Hart Classic Friday and Saturday at the Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium.
The meet will include a video tribute prior to the running of Saturday's 4x400 relays for the legendary Baylor coach, who passed on Nov. 1, 2025, at the age of 91. He was Baylor's head coach from 1963-2005, helping establish the program as "Quarter-Miler U.," and stayed for another 14 years as the director.
"When I decided to change the name of the meet, it was more just of an honor because he coached for 50-plus years and didn't have a meet named after him," said current Baylor head coach Michael Ford. "I think it's just making sure that we continue to live out everything that he taught us as coaches. He was a great coach and a great person, so I'm looking forward to just keep honoring his name and keep the tradition of excellence as we go."
Coming off an indoor season that produced a trio of All-Americans in sprinter Tiriah Kelley, hurdler Demario Prince and pole vaulter Molly Haywood, the Bears opened the outdoor season with four event titles at last week's TCU Alumni Invitational in Fort Worth.
"I thought we competed really well, especially for it being an opener," said Ford, who was in Poland for the World Indoor Championships, where Prince finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 7.43 seconds. "It was probably one of our better openers in a while. Tenly (Kuhn) vaulted well, (Abbas) Ali and Success (Obiyu) had really good runs in the 200, and Laurenz (Colbert) and Bailey (Hashmi) went 1-3 in the 100."
Kuhn is ranked No. 2 in the nation after the opening weekend with a winning vault of 14-3 ¼, and will be joined by Haywood after her fourth-place finish at nationals. Overall, Baylor has eight marks ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA West, including freshman Success Oyibu at No. 4 in the 200 with a PR time of 23.11.
While Haywood is scheduled to compete this weekend, Prince and Kelley will not open their outdoor seasons until at least next week's Texas Relays in Austin.
"We're going to try to race and compete as many people as possible," Ford said. "Unlike last week, where a lot of the group were doing odd events, this will be the first week that we actually start running events that they'll probably run at conference and try to qualify for regionals."
The meet includes track and field powers Arkansas, Texas, TCU and Iowa State, along with more regional schools like St. Edwards, SFA, Tarleton State, UTA, Sam Houston State, Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Tech, University of St. Thomas, Huston-Tillotson and UNT-Dallas.
Also entered are an elite group of athletes that includes Gabby Thomas, who won three gold medals at the 2024 Olympics in Paris; 2016 Olympics heptathlon champion Dalilah Muhammad; 2024 Olympics 400-meter hurdles silver medalist Anna Cockrell; Great Britain 400-meter record-holder and Olympic finalist Amber Anning; Taliyah Brooks, bronze medalist in the heptathlon at the 2024 Olympics; Alexis Holmes, an Olympic gold medalist in the 4x400 relay; and Jamaican Olympians Stacey-Ann Williams and Nickisha Pryce.
"As long as the weather is good, we'll have a good turnout," Ford said. "Being the first home meet, for us as coaches, there's that nervous feeling, trying to make sure that the meet goes smooth and we do good for all the other schools that are competing."
The two-day meet begins with field events at 11 a.m. both days, with running events starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday and the 100-meter hurdles prelims at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and is expected to conclude at around 4:20 p.m. Saturday with two heats in the women's and men's 4x400 relays.
Waco Tribune-Herald sports editor Brice Cherry will have a table set up near the stadium entrance from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, signing the book, "Once Around is Enough," that he co-authored with Coach Hart.
Schedules, heat sheets and live results for the meet will be available at Clyde Hart Classic.
Ticket prices at $11 per day for general admission, with bleacher-style seating with backrests throughout the grandstands; or $17 for individual chairback seating for the bottom half rows closest to the south (riverside) finish line.
