Rakhmanchik records her fourth-consecutive 20-kill performance
WACO, Texas – Sophomore outside hitter Ksenia Rakhmanchik recorded her fourth-consecutive 20-kill night and helped 24th-ranked Baylor overcome two one-set deficits against No. 16 TCU Friday night at the Ferrell Center.
But TCU (16-5, 7-3) dominated the fifth set and pulled out a 27-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-25, 15-9 win over the Bears (13-7, 5-5), snapping Baylor's four-match winning streak in the series that included a sweep just 12 days ago in Fort Worth.
TCU got double-digit kills from Becca Kelley (20) and Evan Hendrix (17), while the Bears countered with Rakhmanchik (23) and sophomore outside hitter Bailey Warren (14). Baylor struggled to get points from other spots and hit just .172 for the match.
Sophomore setter Isabella Haggard posted a double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs, adding three kills, two blocks and an ace and hitting .333. Freshman middle blocker Mya Hemmer chipped in with five kills and a block while hitting .429.
RUNDOWN
In a back-and-forth opening set, the Bears appeared to go up 23-20 when Kelley had an attack error, but the call was overturned on a coach's challenge, and the Frogs closed out the set with a 7-3 run, holding off a Baylor set point and then ending it, 27-25, with a Kelley kill through the block.
Rakhmanchik made a huge impact in the second set, getting kills on two of the first four points of the set and tallying nine of the Bears' 15 kills to square the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 victory. Trailing by as many as nine, the Frogs made things interesting with a 6-0 run to pull within 22-20 before Rakhmanchik closed it out with a tip kill.
Another down-to-the-wire battle in set three ended with TCU winning four of the last five points when Baylor coach Ryan McGuyre was issued a red card on set point at 24-21. The Bears had nine hitting errors and another three from the service line, offsetting five blocks and 12 digs in the set.
Needing to win the fourth set to stay alive, Baylor led from start to finish, hitting .333 to TCU's .045 and recording three service aces with no errors. The Bears jumped out to an 8-3 lead, stretched it to 15-7 at the media timeout and then finished with Rakhmanchik's fourth kill of the set and 22nd of the match.
TCU flipped the script in the fifth, never trailing and hitting .391 with five kills apiece from Kelley and Hendrix. A kill by Warren got the Bears within 8-6, but TCU scored seven of the last nine points, closing it out at 15-8 on an ace by Kelley and a kill by Hendrix on match point.
GAME NOTES
QUOTABLE
Head coach Ryan McGuyre on letting it get away in the fifth set:
"I think serve receive didn't give us the options we wanted, so made it a little bit harder to take some good swings. They served deep to slow some things down. We probably had some communication stuff on in/out things and gave them a couple of points there. But we had some attack errors, too. Middles had some good swings, missed the court there. Fifth set, you want to be able to keep it close, for sure, just so the other side's not playing free."
Isabella Haggard, on the low hitting percentage:
"I didn't think I had a problem putting up balls, and I didn't think our Ninjas had a problem putting up hittable balls. I thought we got blocked early on. We started getting timid. We talk about it every match, we need big swings, big hitters. So, I just think we got pretty timid after getting blocked a few times. And we kept saying the tip wasn't open, but we kept doing it."
Bailey Warren, on battling back from one-set deficits:
"We know something has to change whenever we are down. I think us coming back says a lot about us. But we just want to make sure we stay consistent through the rest of the game, not letting any more sets slip between our fingers.
