BU places five on the 56-player squad
WACO, Texas āĀ Five Baylor football players earned spots on Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine's All-Texas midseason team, the publication announced Wednesday.
Ā
Wide receiver Gavin Freeman, safety Micah Gifford and STAR Daniel Cobbs earned spots on the first team, while linebacker Travion Barnes and punter Palmer Williams joined them on the second team.
Ā
Freeman has made an immediate impact for the offense in his first season on the Brazos, leading the team and the Big 12 with 49 catches to go along with his 555 yards and two touchdown grabs. His 92.5 receiving yards per game put him third in the conference and 14th in the country, while his 8.17 catches per game are third best in the nation.
Ā
Gifford picked off his second pass of the season this last Saturday against TCU, giving him a share of the team lead and tying for the second-most in the league. Leading the team in assisted tackles with 11, the Pflugerville, Texas, native is second on the team with 30 total tackles, 2.5 of those for loss.
Ā
Cobbs has been a key piece of Joel Klanderman's defense at the STAR position, after coming over from Kansas State this offseason. In his first season with the Bears, Cobbs has been a disrupter on the defensive side, sitting second on the team in tackles for loss (four) and leading the squad in sacks (three).
Ā
Barnes earned his way on the second team, boasting a team-high 36 tackles, with 3.5 of those coming behind the line of scrimmage. A Preseason All-Texas Second Teamer, Barnes has also earned his way onto the Phil Steele Preseason All-Big Third Team, Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List and the Shriners 1000 Watch List.
Ā
Williams' 51.4-yard punting average is tops in nation and on pace to lead the league for a third-straight season and the nation for a second time in the last three years, which would make him the first Bear to accomplish that feat. A Ray Guy Award finalist and the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year, last season, the Advance, N.C., native is on pace to leave Baylor as the program's career punting-average leader while owning two of the best single-season averages in school history.
Ā
Baylor will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 12 p.m. against the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kansas. J.B. Long, Mike Golic Jr. and Allie LaForce will have the call for TNT/tru TV/HBOMax, while John Morris, Geff Gandy and Bryson Jackson bring you the action on the Baylor Sports Media Network.
