John Morris
“Voice of the Baylor Bears”
Recognized by the National Sports Media Association in 2019 as the Texas Co-Sportscaster of the year, the “Voice of the Bears”, John Morris is in his 30
th year as the signature voice of Baylor Athletics. This is his 38
th year overall including eight years (1987 – 1994) working alongside the legendary Frank Fallon. Officially, he is Baylor’s Assistant Athletic Director for Broadcasting and his duties now include play-by-play for Baylor Football and 2021 National Champion Men’s Basketball in addition to third tier television broadcasts on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
Going into the 2024 football season, Morris has broadcast 429 consecutive B.U. Football games. Morris has also been behind the mic for Baylor Baseball, Softball, Women’s Basketball, Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball, Equestrian, Track & Field and Acrobatics & Tumbling while also hosting Baylor Coach’s Shows and the Sic ‘Em Podcast.
In November, 2024, Morris was named the National Football Foundation's recipient of the Chris Schenkel Award. First presented in 1996, the award recognizes individuals who have had long, distinguished careers broadcasting college football with direct ties to a specific university or platform. The award is named in honor of its inaugural recipient Chris Schenkel, the longtime ABC Sports broadcaster who emceed the NFF Annual Awards Dinner for 28 consecutive years from 1968 to 1995. With Morris earning the award, Baylor is now the first school in history with two NFF Chris Schenkel Award recipients, as Morris' mentor, Frank Fallon, earned the award in 2001.
In August, 2024, he was presented the Dave Campbell Award by the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce for contributions to football in Central Texas. He was previously honored with the Frank Fallon Sportsmanship Award named for his mentor from the Waco Chamber in November, 2002.
A December, 1980 Baylor graduate, Morris worked 15-years as TV sports anchor and Sports Director on Waco’s CBS affiliate, KWTX-TV before moving to Baylor Athletics full-time in 1995. At Homecoming in November, 1999, Morris was named one of Baylor’s outstanding young alumni.
John Morris is a native of Louisville, Kentucky and graduated with honors from Danville (Ky.) High School in 1977. A proud father of three and grandfather of four, Morris is married to the former Terri Melton, a 1985 Baylor graduate. They are the parents of Meagan (35) a Baylor graduate, Maddie (31) a Baylor Nursing School Graduate, and M.J. (27) a Baylor Mechanical Engineering Graduate. The Morris family is active at Harris Creek Baptist Church.
