The Bears get the win with a singles sweep
WACO, Texas – No. 25 Baylor women's tennis (5-1) defeated San Diego State (2-2), 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Bears lost the doubles point for the first time in 2025, but were able to bounce back and get a singles sweep to gain their fifth win of the season.
THE RUNDOWN
Starting off the match in doubles, Kennedy Gibbs and Na Dong fell to San Diego State's Yasmine Kabbaj and Ninon Martinache, 6-2, on Court Two. On Court One, 14th-ranked Liubov Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea had a 6-5 result due to retirement, giving the two their sixth win together this spring.
To close out doubles play, Zuzanna Kubacha and Wenfei Yu suffered their first loss as a pair on Court Three in a tiebreak, 7-6 (6), with the Bears dropping the doubles point for the first time this season.
In singles action, No. 117 Kubacha got her first win as a ranked singles player of the season at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1, to tie up the match at one point each. Kostenko defeated the Aztecs' Jo-Yee Chan, 6-4, 6-3, on Court Two to give BU the lead at 2-1.
On Court Six, Yu was able to take down San Diego State's Vesa Gjinaj, 6-3, 6-2. Tiglea followed in picking up a Court One dub, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the match at 4-1.
Playing through, Gibbs garnered a, 7-6 (2), 4-2, ret., win on Court Five and freshman No. 85 Dong remains undefeated in spring singles action with a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6) victory to complete the sweep in singles play.
