Dong upsets No. 1 seed in first round
ORLANDO, Fla. – On a big stage that has showcased some of the best players in college tennis history, Baylor women's tennis planted its flag again.
Senior Na Dong delivered one of the headline results of opening day at the NCAA Division I Women's Singles Championship, taking down No. 1 seed Valerie Glozman of Stanford, while junior Zuzanna Kubacha earned a straight-sets win over Duke's Liv Hovde, the 2022 Wimbledon girls' singles champion.
Both wins pushed the Bears into the Round of 32 and echoed Baylor's proud tradition of NCAA individual success, dating back to Zuzana Zemenova's national singles title in 2005.
From Head Coach Joey Scrivano
"This was a special day for two incredible athletes who work relentlessly and are extremely coachable. I'm not surprised at all, Na and Zuza invest in their development, put in the work, and are true students of the game. For Na to beat the No. 1 seed and for Zuza to take out a former Wimbledon junior champion on the same day says everything about the kind of players we have here and where this program is headed."

THE RUNDOWN
Kubacha was the first Bear on court at the USTA National Campus. Facing Duke's Hovde, who captured the Wimbledon girls' singles crown in 2022, Kubacha met the moment with poise.
She edged a tight first set 7–5, using consistent deep returns to pressure Hovde's serve, then kept her foot down in the key moments of set two to close out a 7–5, 6–4 victory.
On Court 12, Dong stepped into one of the toughest assignments in college tennis: Glozman, the ITA All-American champion, tournament No. 1 seed, and winner of 14 straight collegiate matches coming into Orlando.
Dong struck first, taking the opening set 6–3 behind aggressive returning and rock-solid defense. In a seesaw second set, she held three match points before Glozman clawed back to steal the tiebreak, forcing a decider.
Rather than fade, Dong reset and raised her level again in the third. Staying disciplined to her patterns and winning the big baseline exchanges, she completed the upset 6–3, 6–7 (1), 6–4, handing the top seed her first collegiate loss since March 2025 and punctuating one of the signature wins of her Baylor career.

WHY IT MATTERS – PROGRAM & NCAA CONTEXT
- A marquee NCAA upset: Top seeds rarely bow out on day one of the 64-player NCAA singles draw. Dong's win over the tournament's No. 1 seed and recent ITA All-American champion made national headlines and immediately became one of the defining stories of the opening round.
- Beating a grand slam junior champion: Kubacha's victory came over Hovde, who won the Wimbledon girls' singles title in 2022, a feat achieved by only a handful of Americans in the last three decades.
- Carrying Baylor's individual legacy forward: Baylor is no stranger to big moments in NCAA singles – Zuzana Zemenova won the NCAA women's singles title in 2005, becoming the first unseeded champion in tournament history, the same year Baylor swept both the men's and women's singles crowns. Dong and Kubacha's run in Orlando is the latest chapter in that tradition of elite individual performance.
- Momentum from a breakout year: Dong arrived in Orlando on the heels of a 27–3 singles season and a 15-match win streak through Baylor's team campaign, underscoring how her national upset is the continuation—not the start—of her emergence as one of college tennis' toughest competitors.
