
Appel, Sternfeldt Shine in SMU Invitational

DALLAS -- Sparkling rounds from Jonas Appel and Vincent Stjernfeldt led to top-20 finishes, highlighting Baylor men's golf at the three-day SMU Invitational at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, Texas.
The Bears posted a fifth-place finish in the event, hosted by the Mustangs at Trinity Forest. The Bears finished with a 10-under score of 854 (279-292-283), highlighted by a 5-under on Sunday and a 7-under team score on Tuesday.
Baylor finished shy of Rice, USC, South Alabama and SMU in the field, besting Furman, North Texas, ETSU, Louisiana-Lafayette, UTRGV, Sam Houston, Abilene Christian, Cal Poly and UTSA.
Appel, a native of Encintas, Calif., had another team-leading performance, after entering the tournament with a club-best 72.67 stroke average. Appel finished 11th overall in the 87-man field, which featured a career-best 66, good for 6-under, on Sunday, buoyed by six birdies and an eagle. After firing an even-par 72 on Monday, Appel closed the tournament with a 1-under 71 that featured five birdies.
Sternfeldt placed 18th overall and was boosted by a final round 69, the second-best score of his career. He had a 1-over 73 on Monday and a 2-under 70 on Sunday.
Alex Heard finished in 34th place, carding an even-par 72 on Sunday, a 2-over 74 on Monday and a 2-under 70 on Tuesday.
Sam Dossey finished 74th, totaling a 6-over 78, a 3-over 75 and a 1-over 73.
Davis Ovard placed 41st, carding a 1-under 71 on Sunday, a 1-over 73 on Monday and a 2-over 74 in the final round.
Evan Vo and Patrick Babb each competed as individuals, with Vo finishing with a 5-over and Babb a 9-over. Babb's first collegiate tournament was highlighted by birdies on 16-17-18 to finish with a 1-over 73 on Monday. Babb finished 71stand Vo placed 50th.
The Bears will return to action on Oct. 27-28 in Tulsa, Olka., at The Clerico.
