The Cyclones and Buffaloes represent top-25 RPI opportunities for the Bears
WACO, Texas – No. 18 Baylor volleyball returns to action beginning Wednesday night when it opens a two-match road trip at Iowa State, with first serve set for 6:30 p.m.
Opening the week at No. 19 in the RPI, Baylor is within striking distance of positioning itself to host NCAA tournament matches in December. The Cyclones enter the week at No. 25 in the RPI, while Friday's opponent, Colorado, sits at No. 17. Head coach Ryan McGuyre and his team know the opportunity that is in front of them. They are excited to see how they meet the road challenge this week.
"This week is really important for us from a standings and RPI standpoint, and how we're developing as a team," McGuyre said. "We didn't like the taste in our mouths from our last week of road trip. The last few weeks were an opportunity to respond, which we did at home, but now can we respond on the road in similar circumstances against two really, really good teams?"
The Bears enter with no shortage of recent success against Iowa State, winning 14 of the last 17 matches, including a 3-1 win in Waco a season ago.
After shutting down No. 17 BYU's offense last week, Baylor will look to deliver another strong defensive showing against one of the Big 12's top attacking teams in Colorado. The Buffaloes enter the week hitting .258 in conference play, while the Bears rank third in the league in opponent hitting percentage at .191. Baylor has held three of its last four opponents below .200, leaning on a balanced block and consistent back-row defense to control momentum.
Offensively, efficiency remains a deciding factor, as BU is 12-1 when out-hitting their opponent and 0-5 when they don't. Fast starts also remain a key to the Bears' success. Baylor is 11–1 this season when winning the opening set, using early rhythm and serving pressure to take control of matches.
Baylor's fabulous freshmen aim to take their show on the road, as Morgan Madison, Ksenia Rakhmanchik and Bailey Warren have combined to play in 90% of the team's sets this season. After Warren took home the honor this week, all three have earned Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors, marking the first time since 2022, and only the second time in program history, that three different freshmen have done so in the same season.
ESPN+ will have the coverage of the match, with stats available all season at Baylorbears.com/stats.
