AMES, Iowa – No. 18 Baylor volleyball came up short on the road Wednesday night, falling in straight sets to Iowa State, 3-0, inside Hilton Coliseum.
The Bears, now 12-7 (7-4), battled through three tightly contested sets once again, but couldn't sustain momentum against a balanced Cyclone attack. Baylor matched a season low with a .134 hitting percentage while Iowa State hit just .176 on its home floor. With the loss, Baylor dropped to 2-3 in Big 12 road matches, but in each of its last nine road sets, BU has lost by an average of just 2.5 points per set.
In the opening set, neither team could build a lead bigger than three until Iowa State made it 19-15, forcing a Baylor timeout. After the break, BU stormed back within one on the strength of a 5-2 run. A 3-0 spurt from ISU, though, forced Baylor to stave off three set points before the Cyclones sealed the match with an Alea Goolsby kill.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with neither team able to build any kind of significant lead. Baylor led by as many as four at 13-9, but Iowa State would chip away, using a 4-0 run to flip the set in their favor at 20-18. BU fought back to tie the match at 22, before three more Cyclone points put them in firm control of the match after another 25-23 win.
With their backs against the wall, the Bears battled in a set that featured 11 ties and four lead changes, the last coming on a 3-0 'Clone run to take a 17-14 lead. BU would get back within a point at 17-16 and again at 18-17, but the hill was too tall to climb on Wednesday night, as BU fell in the final set 25-21.
Offensively, Bailey Warren paced the Bears with a match-high 13 kills, marking her fourth straight match in double figures and the only player from either side to reach double digits. The reigning Big 12 Rookie of the Week also posted a career-best 13 digs for her third double-double of the season. Victoria Davis followed with nine kills on a team-best .238 hitting, while Manuela Bibinbe added eight kills and six blocks.
Defensively, Gabrielle Essix anchored the front line with seven blocks, her most since stuffing 10 at Texas Tech last month, as Baylor out-blocked Iowa State 11–10 on the night. Setter Harley Kreck finished with 32 assists and nine digs, while defensive specialist Tehani Ulufatu tallied 10 digs and two assists.
The Bears return to action on Friday in a showdown at No. 23 Colorado. The game will air on ESPN+, with stats available all season at Baylorbears.com/stats.
