The Bears extend their win streak to five in a row
WACO, Texas – Baylor women's tennis defeated new Big 12 opponent Houston at the Hurd Tennis Center Sunday afternoon, besting the Cougars 6-1.
The Bears remain undefeated in conference play, rising to 4-0 in the league and 11-5 overall.
Houston (1-9) claimed the doubles point by tiebreaker on court one, as Sonya Kovalenko and Sophie Schouten outlasted Sierra Berry and Zuzanna Kubacha, 7-6(5). The Cougars' Laura Slisane and Maria Dzemeshkevich got the better of Liubov Kostenko and Lauren Littell on court three, 6-1, while Miska Kadleckova and Zuzanna Frankowska took court two, 6-3.
In singles play, Kadleckova and Kubacha raced each other to a pair of straight-set sweeps over their opponents at the No. 1 and No. 4 position.
Frankowska claimed Baylor's third point of the afternoon in a 6-2, 7-5 decision on court six, and Danielle Tuhten followed up moments later with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court four to clinch the match for the Bears.
Playing out the remaining courts, Kostenko overcame Maria Dzemeshkevich, 7-5, 6-2, and Sierra Berry defeated Sophie Schouten after forcing a third set, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to claim all six singles courts for the Bears.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Lincoln, Nebraska, to take on the Cornhuskers, kicking off a three-game road trip that also features a pair of Big 12 matches with Kansas State and No. 1 Oklahoma State.
