HUMBLE, Texas – Playing the "exact same pins and the exact same tees" on this Golf Club of Houston course seven weeks ago, Baylor women's golf won the ICON Invitational with a 54-hole total of 24-under-par 840.
En route to beating runner-up SMU by 33 shots to win the Lone Star Invitational on Tuesday, the Bears nearly matched that with a school-record 23-under 265 in Monday's opening round and also shattered the program's 54-hole tournament record with a 38-under-par 826 total.
"When they get going and they're in a place where they feel good, this team can make a ton of birdies," said Baylor coach Jay Goble, whose 14th-ranked team won its school-record sixth tournament of the season. "We had a little game where we were trying to make 30 birdies on the first day, and we made 52."
In February, Baylor had its best-ever team score in relation to par – 24-under. But this one blew that away and broke the previous school record of 833, set in the season-opening Schooner Fall Classic, when the Bears shot 7-under on the par-70 Belmar Golf Club course in Norman, Okla.
"I think my team, obviously, has a good feeling here," Goble said. "If you look at all of our wins, they're all essentially in the same geographical area. We feel good playing in Texas and Oklahoma, we feel comfortable here."
SMU, the only other team in the six-team field to shoot below par, closed with a 3-under 285 in Tuesday's final round and finished second at 5-under 859. Shooting 10-under 278 in the final round, the Bears also recorded wins over Texas State (1-over, 865), BYU (15-over, 879), Kansas (24-over, 888) and Tulane (34-over, 898).
"You can only beat the teams that are entered in the event," Goble said, "and you can only shoot a school record if you play well."
Senior Gurleen Kaur strung together six-straight birdies on her front nine and shot the best round of the day with a 5-under 67. Finishing at 8-under 208, she moved up three spots to place fourth behind Houston's Maria Jose Martinez (14-under, 202), Lauren Heinlein of Kansas (10-under, 206) and Baylor freshman Hannah Karg (9-under, 207).
Tied for the lead at one point, Karg shot 1-under 71 in Tuesday's final round and recorded her second top-5 finish of the season. Freshmen Rosie Belsham and Britta Snyder were Baylor's other two scoring golfers in Tuesday's round, shooting 69 and 71, respectively, and tied for seventh at 5-under 211.
Sixth-year senior Elodie Chapelet gave the Bears their fifth player in the top 10, shooting even-par 72 in the final round and finishing 10th in the 39-player field at 2-under 214. Freshman Nina Lang started the day in the top 10, but fell to a tie for 17th at 4-over 220 with a final-round score of 6-over 78.
"I think everybody played well," Goble said. "The funny thing about golf is you can always say that you could have done a little better. I think everybody on our team played well, but they also see areas that they can improve and get better for this weekend and moving forward."
Baylor will be one of the top seeds for the Big 12 Championship that starts Sunday at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands.
"I believe this should do nothing but give them confidence moving into this weekend and postseason," Goble said. "We're going to enjoy another win, but we're also understanding the timeline and where we are right now. We're going to get back to work on Thursday, and we'll be practicing and getting ready for Carlton Woods and working on the things we need to get better at moving forward. But, we are trending, I would say."

"We're where we need to be," head coach Jay Goble said. "We needed competition, we needed a win. Everything that we wanted to accomplish this week, we did. Throwing in an individual tournament round record is pretty big as well. I believe this should do nothing but give them confidence moving into this weekend and postseason."
