Kaur’s 6-under 66 breaks program record for Big 12 Championship round

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Baylor women's golf is in second place after shooting 5-under-par 283 in Sunday's first round of the 2021 Big 12 Championship at Carlton Woods, while Gurleen Kaur holds the individual lead by three strokes after a first-round 6-under 66.
No. 15 Baylor (-5) trails No. 6 Oklahoma State (-9) by four strokes. The Bears have an early lead on No. 18 Texas (-3), No. 32 Oklahoma (-1), Kansas State (-1), No. 45 TCU (+1), No. 29 Texas Tech (+2), Kansas (+8) and No. 37 Iowa State (+8).
Kaur, a fourth-year junior from Houston, has a three-shot lead in the individual standings after breaking the program record for best Big 12 Championship round with a 6-under 66. Kaur made three-consecutive birdies on the second, third and fourth holes, then strung together seven pars before back-to-back birdies on No. 12 and No. 13. She posted her sixth birdie on No. 17 and finished the bogey-free round with a par on No. 18.
Kaur's 66 was two shots better than any previous Big 12 Championship round by a Baylor player, breaking the previous record of 68 set by Lauren Taylor in 2013, Dylan Kim and 2017 and Kaur in 2019.
Baylor's team score of 283 was the second-best Big 12 Championship round in program history, one stroke back of the record 282 on the way to its first Big 12 Championship title in 2015 at Dominion CC in San Antonio, Texas.
Baylor also got rounds of even-par 72 by a pair of freshmen making their postseason debuts. Britta Snyder made birdie on No. 18 to get back to even-par, and Rosie Belsham played her entire round at or below par, starting with four-straight pars before chipping in for eagle on No. 5. Snyder and Belsham are tied for 13th place.
The Bears' final counting score came from Elodie Chapelet, who made 15 pars on her way to a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for 24th place. Hannah Karg carded 2-over 74 and is tied for 30th place.
Baylor ranks second in the field in par-4 scoring at even-par 4.00 and second in par-5 scoring at 3-under 4.85. Belsham's eagle on No. 5 was the only eagle in the tournament's first round. Kaur leads the 45-player field in par-5 scoring at 3-under 4.25 and is tied for the lead in par-4 scoring at 3-under 3.70. Karg is tied for third in par-3 scoring at 1-under 2.75.

10-under – Baylor took the first-round turn at 10-under-par, with all five players below par and only one bogey out of 45 holes played. Kaur, Belsham and Snyder were all 3-under at the turn, while Karg and Chapelet were both 1-under. The Bears held a three-shot lead at the halfway point in the first round.
