In a bittersweet end, the Baylor soccer team (2-3-3) will play its final match of the fall against Oklahoma (0-5-1) at 5 p.m. Friday at Betty Lou Mays Field.
Coming off of a hard-fought 1-0 loss at Texas, the Bears are focused on using the skills they've honed all season long against the Sooners.
Sophomore forward Elizabeth Kooiman said she walked away from last week's game encouraged after outshooting the Longhorns, 23-16, and seeing the team work so hard.
"It was frustrating. We definitely had a lot of opportunities and we definitely could have been better finishing those," Kooiman said. "But, knowing that we have those opportunities in the future, hopefully we'll improve at putting those away. It's definitely encouraging to see."
Looking at the season as a whole, Kooiman said the mindset has been "figuring out how we want to play as a team and working toward that."
"I would say we have definitely improved a lot throughout the course of the season," she said. "We're just getting better every day and getting closer to how we want to be playing."
Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt said she has been able to witness the freshmen on the backline mature and improve alongside the veterans.
"[The freshmen] played well right from the start… but watching them grow, and just all of us grow together as a backline has just been awesome," Wandt said. "It's been fun to watch them grow and get to be a part of that."
Wandt, currently 5th in Big 12 history for shutouts (30), hasn't allowed a goal in four home games this season and wants to continue that streak tonight.
"Obviously at home, it's easier, because we have the home crowd, we're in our home area, so we tend to be able to dominate more at home," Wandt said.
Oklahoma is behind in its fall schedule due to COVID-19-related game delays and has yet to win a game this season. First-year head coach Mark Carr was hired in January after six years with the U.S. Soccer Federation, including coaching the U.S. U-20 Women's National Team last year.
"They've got a new coach to put some new things together, a new staff, new players," Baylor head coach Paul Jobson said. "They've not really gotten the results, but you don't want to be the team where they start to streak."
As far his own coaching strategy goes, Jobson said consistency and hard work are crucial.
"We put them in positions to be successful. You just drill it and drill it and drill it until it becomes second nature," he said. "You become what you consistently do, and we need to be consistent."
With the Bears seemingly hitting their stride late in the year, Jobson said he hates to see the fall season end.
"I think we're really starting to come along really, really well and gaining some momentum in some areas that I'd love to see us be able to continue that through maybe another couple of matches," he said.
With the NCAA tournament moving to the spring this year because of COVID, Jobson said he hopes the Bears can pick up where they leave off.
"Hopefully, we can just put it on the back burner for a bit, sharpen our knives through the offseason, through this winter break, and come back in the spring segment and take off where we finished off this fall."
Kooiman said it felt "a little strange" knowing that the team would get a chance to play more games in the spring— an opportunity no team has had before.
"Hopefully, [we] finish out this last game strong and get momentum going into the next part of the season," Kooiman said.
Friday's game will be streamed by Big 12 Now on ESPN+, with Lincoln Rose and Jessica Stamp calling the action.
