Todd Harbour can't think of a better way to send coaching legend Clyde Hart out than the Baylor men winning the 4x400-meter national championship for the 20thtime overall and 11that the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships that begin Wednesday in Austin.
"Those guys are going to contend for a national championship. They're not going there with any other expectation than winning it," Harbour said. "What a great way to send Coach Hart out. You've got a couple seniors on there, and it would be a great ending for those guys."
Hart is retiring from Baylor after 56 years, including 42 as head coach and the last 14 as Director of Track & Field. His Baylor 4x400 teams dominated a 10-year stretch (2000-09, winning a combined 10 national championships in the event indoors and outdoors, but the Bears' last title came at the 2009 indoor.
Anchored by senior All-American Wil London, Baylor's team of freshman Michael Moorer, sophomore Howard Fields III and senior Chris Platt is among the favorites in a field that includes Texas A&M, Iowa, Houston and Florida.
At the NCAA West Preliminary rounds in Sacramento, Calif., Platt subbed in for senior Caleb Dickson and had a 45.92 split on the third leg, setting up London to run down the Iowa anchor with a time of 3:03.17 that ranks second among the qualifying teams behind only Texas A&M (3:03.05).
"Caleb was just struggling a little bit, so Coach (Hart) made that last-minute call to bring Chris out," Harbour said of Platt, a receiver for the football team who won three consecutive state titles in the 400 meters at Willis High School. "Chris is one of the smoothest, prettiest runners you'll ever watch. It was just a matter of getting him back in shape. He stepped up and ran a 45.9."
Platt, who has run on the 4x400 relay in the past, said he went to the Sacramento meet not knowing if he was even going to run, "but I always have to be prepared."
"When they called my name, I went out there and did what I had to do," he said.
London, a threat to win the open 400 meters with a season-best time of 44.93, said the Bears haven't always had the depth to be able to sub in a talented runner like Platt.
"There's been times where he was running, but he was going through the process of getting back from football," London said. "This time, he's back and he's healthy and he's getting faster every day."
Making it to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the fourth year in a row, London wants to finish on a strong note after eighth-place finishes in the 400 the last two years.
"I'm way better than I was last year, and more confident," said London, who finished third at the NCAA Indoor Championships this year and swept the Big 12 indoor and outdoor titles "I've been on the right path this whole season, running fast at the right time. I know, this being the last one, this will be the fast one that I'm ready for."
Harbour said London "is on a mission."
"He hasn't had the greatest NCAA meet, other than this year's indoor," Harbour said. "But, he's ready, he wants to take it to a different level. And he knows this is his last opportunity to do that. So, I think he's focused and locked-in."
London and Fields are running in the first heat in Wednesday's 400-meter semifinals, scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. In a schedule adjusted by expected weather issues, the men's 4x400 relay will start at 7:18 p.m.
"I just want to win," London said. "I would like to break the school record (Jeremy Wariner, 44.00, 2004), but I just want to win. Whatever I have to do to get the gold, I'm ready to run that."
Baylor's other two events on Wednesday will be freshman KC Lightfoot in the pole vault at 4:30 p.m. and sophomore Jalen Seals in the long jump at 6.
Lighfoot swept the Big 12 indoor and outdoor titles and earned his first All-American honor with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships, going 18-5 ½.
"I'm jumping against some of the same people, so I know what to expect," Lightfoot said. "It's not going to be too much different, other than we've got 12 more other guys. All in all, it's the same atmosphere, so I feel prepared."
Seals was ranked 42ndin the West region going into the Sacramento meet, but jumped a season-best 24-7 ¾ to finish in the top 12 and advance to Wednesday's semifinals. He suffered an injury on his final attempt and was held out of the triple jump.
"Anytime you come out of the second, third and fourth flights, that's amazing," Harbour said. "I'm really proud for him."
The women will take the spotlight on Thursday, with redshirt sophomore Aaliyah Miller a threat in the 800 meters after running a season-best time of 2:03.68. Miller is also part of the pool for the 4x400 relay that includes Victoria Powell, Kiana Horton, sophomore sprinter Sydney Washington and half-milers Leticia De Souza and Morgan Stewart.
"If we run 3:30 or sub 3:30, which we're capable of right now, we'll be in the finals," Harbour said of the women's 4x400 relay. "And then, anything can happen. The ladies have the potential to put something down a lot faster than we've run. We've just got to get them all to do it."

WACO, Texas – Baylor track & field is set to close the 2019 campaign as the Bears travel south on Interstate 35 to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 5-8 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
"Being just 90 miles down the road in Austin - at a place that a lot of our athletes have called home, have run state championships - they've got a lot of great memories there," head coach Todd Harbour said. "So, it's a nice tradeoff. There's no crowd in the world like Eugene. It's unbelievable. Those people up there appreciate great performance - it's like a European crowd. But Austin is home, and we're real excited."
Senior Wil London, sophomores Howard Fields III, Jalen Seals, and Aaliyah Miller, as well as freshman KC Lightfoot will be competing for national championships along with both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams.
This will be London's fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where he earned All-America honors in 2017 and 2018 with eighth-place finishes both years. The Waco, Texas, native was a double All-American in 2018 as the Bears' 4x400-meter relay team placed seventh. London will be competing in both the 400 meters and 4x400-meter relay this week.
Fields returns to the outdoor championships for the second straight season as he was a member of the Bears' All-America 4x400-meter relay team as a freshman. This will be his first time to compete in the 400 meters at Nationals, and he will be on the 4x400-meter relay team again this week.
Miller competed in both the 800 meters and 4x400-meter relay as a freshman at the 2018 outdoor championships, where she was an All-American on the Bears' 4x400 squad. She will once again be competing in the 800 and 4x4 this week.
Seals and Lightfoot will be making their first appearances at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Lightfoot is in the midst of a banner freshman season, where he was an All-American and Big 12 Champion in the indoor pole vault and a Big 12 Champion outdoors in the pole vault, as well.
Seals has earned seven All-Big 12 honors between indoor and outdoor during his first two years at Baylor.
The men's 4x400-meter relay will travel London and Fields along with Chris Platt, Matthew Moorer, Caleb Dickson, and Antwuan Musgrove to Austin. On the women's side, Miller as well as Kiana Horton, Victoria Powell, Sydney Washington, Leticia De Souza, and Morgan Stewart will be making the trip as members of the 4x4 squad.
"We've pointed to it all year that we want to finish strong," Harbour said. "We didn't have our best meet last year at the end of the year at Eugene. So, we really want to have a great ending to this season. And I think both groups are set up."
The 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be televised on the ESPN family of networks, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN3.
