After competing in smaller invitational meets in each of the first two weekends of the outdoor season, the Baylor track and field team will take a big step up this week with the 92ndClyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
"It's a big, hyped-up meeting, and there's just a lot of stuff on the peripheral of it," Baylor coach Todd Harbour said. "You have to make sure your athletes get locked-in and focused and just know that hey, we're down there to compete. It's really too early in the season with us just coming out of indoor, to get amped up too high. But, it forces you to do that. You don't want to put too much into it, but at the same time you want to go down and do well.'
Taking a total of 38 competitors to the three-day meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium, which is hosting this year's NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Bears are coming off a Baylor Invitational that saw them win 20 event titles.
Highlights from the first of Baylor's two home meets included sophomore Alex Madlock winning the triple jump with a PR mark of 44-0 ¾ that ranks No. 1 nationally; freshman Cole Hardan breaking the school record in the hammer throw (179-6) and winning the shot put with a toss of 57-8 ¼; sophomore Kennedy Bailey clocking a PR time of 13.45 in the 100-meter hurdles to rank 12thnationally; and freshman Kalon "Boogie" Barnes winning the 100 meters in 10.29, which ranks seventh nationally.
"It's hard to put it up against the (Michael Johnson Invitational), but I think that was one of our better invite meets. We had a lot of quality performances," Harbour said. "Alex jumped the No. 1 triple jump in the nation and (had her personal best) by over a foot. Now, she's got to come back and do that this week at Texas Relays against the kind of field she'll see at nationals."
Second-year assistant coach Jeff Chakouian, who works with the throwers and multi-events, has already made a big impact. After helping Megan SaxvanderWeyden, Ricky Sanchez and Luke Littlefield earn All-Big 12 honors last year, he's seen SaxvanderWeyden and Hardan break school records.
"This is my second year with Coach Chak," said SaxvanderWeyden, who won the javelin at the Baylor Invitational with a mark of 158-1. "He's really helped me finetune a lot of parts of the javelin throw that I didn't really have packed-down. Those are the things that are helping me get those extra few meters that will really help set me above."
Going into Texas Relays, the Baylor men are 13thand the women 31stin the latest USTFCCCA rankings.
Those are not reflective of the men's 4x400 relay running a winning time of 3:08.00 at the Baylor meet with the quartet of Jayson Baldridge, Matthew Moorer, Caleb Dickson and Howard Fields III. Senior All-American Wil London, third in the 400 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships, is still being held out with a sore hamstring.
Chris Platt, one of five football players who are doubling in track, could run on the 4x4 relay this week.
"Chris may get called into duty this week with Wil still not ready to go, not 100 percent, so we're not going to take any chances with him," Harbour said. "Just because it's Texas Relays, of course, he's disappointed. But, it's just too early in the season. He came through indoors healthy until the NCAA meet, so we're just trying to be smart."
Moorer, a freshman, said the "responsibility of being on the Baylor 4x4 is definitely high."
"It pushes me to get better every day, because I see them and I want to run times and get to the point where they are," said Moorer, who won the 400 last weekend with a time of 46.81. "They all push me every single day. It helps a lot having them here. And Wil, he's been through it all."
Live results for the meet are available at http://relays.texassports.com. The Longhorn Network will have live coverage at 5-7 p.m. Friday and 1:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday, with the 4x400 relays wrapping up the meet.
Following the Texas Relays, Baylor will compete in Texas A&M's Reveille Invitational next Saturday in College Station before hosting the Michael Johnson Invitational April 19-20 at Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium.
WACO, Texas – Baylor track & field looks to build off of a successful start to the outdoor season as the Bears travel south on I-35 for the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Thursday through Saturday in Austin, Texas.
"It's another great meet weekend for our athletes to take further steps," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We're coming off of a strong home meet and are hoping to continue the momentum."
It will be an elite crew of 38 Baylor student-athletes competing at Mike A Myers Stadium & Soccer Field over the span of three days.
The prelims of the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles will kick things off for the Bears Thursday at 4:30 p.m. CT, with the men's and women's 5,000 meters taking place at 9 p.m. CT.
