Bears ready for final road weekend of the regular season

Even during the recruiting process, Baylor soccer coach Paul Jobson saw freshman forward Elizabeth Kooiman as someone who could "come in and make an impact."
"As a freshman, you don't want to put that kind of pressure on kids," he said, "but we felt like sooner or later she was going to find the back of the net. We didn't know it would come in a windfall of three in one game, but we knew it was coming, and we hope she can gain some momentum from that, especially when we're having a hard time finding goals right now."
Kooiman, a freshman from San Jose, Calif., gave the Bears (6-3-3, 2-1-0) the lift they needed last Thursday when she had the program's first hat trick in nine years with three second-half goals in a 4-2 win over West Virginia.
"We played some really good soccer, some of the best we've played yet," said senior forward Raegan Padgett, who scored the other goal and assisted on another. "It was a really big win going into another big conference weekend."
The West Virginia game was sandwiched between a pair of two-game road trips. After going 1-1 on a trip to the Sunflower State, the Bears go back on the road to face TCU (8-4-1, 2-1-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday in Fort Worth and then travel up I-35 to Norman for a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Oklahoma (6-4-3, 1-1-1).
Baylor has already played seven of its first 12 games on the road, including going 2-1-1 on a road trip that included four games in 11 days in four different states.
"It's always harder to win on the road," Jobson said. "And I think if you prepare your team for those experiences, it gives you a better chance. We've been road warriors, we've had ups and downs. I think we've experienced almost everything you can on the road so far this year. So, I think we're definitely prepared at this point."
Kooiman's hat trick opened the floodgates for a team that had scored just seven goals combined in its previous seven games.
"To come from a freshman, it takes pressure off a lot of other players," Jobson said of Kooiman, who was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week. "Hopefully, for that reason, it will open it up for other players and maybe we'll start scoring more goals as a team."
Senior forward Camryn Wendlandt scored three goals in the first four games, but had missed five games with ankle and foot injuries before returning to play 27 second-half minutes in last week's game against West Virginia.
"The plan is to continue to ramp her minutes up so we can get more and more out of her and not have to ride some of our other forwards as much as we've had to the last few weeks," Jobson said. "We're excited to get a little bit deeper up front."
TCU has had some significant wins this season, beating then-No. 25 SMU, 1-0, and handing Oklahoma its only conference loss, 2-0. On Sunday, freshman Gracie Bryan scored a pair of second-half goals to help the Horned Frogs rally to beat Iowa State, 2-1, on the road.
Bryan has scored a team-leading eight goals and four game-winners, while junior midfielder Jazmeen Ryan has seven goals and five assists.
"We kind of go into every game just wanting to play our game," Padgett said. "So, a lot of us don't think too much about what they're going to play and what different they're going to do from the next team. it's just easier on us to think that way and play that way."
As much as they study the other team's strengths and weaknesses, Jobson said, "we want to be as sharp as we can be, because we think they've got to worry more about us week to week than we need to worry about our opponent."
Thursday's game will be broadcast by FOX Sports Southwest Plus, with Sunday's game at Oklahoma televised by FSN.
Baylor returns home next Friday, Oct. 18, to host league-leading Texas (8-5-0, 3-1-0) in a game where the Bears will celebrate last year's Big 12 regular-season championship.
WACO, Texas – Baylor Soccer (6-3-3, 2-1) hits the road this weekend to face TCU (8-4-1, 2-2-1) at 7 p.m. on Thursday before taking on Oklahoma (6-4-3, 1-1-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The TCU match will air on FOX Sports Southwest Plus with Sunday's contest at Oklahoma televised on FOX Sports Southwest.
This marks the final road weekend of the 2019 regular season for the Bears as their final away match is at Oklahoma State on Halloween. So far this year, Baylor is 3-2-2 on the road with wins at Drake, Wyoming and Kansas State.
The Bears are coming off a 4-2 win over West Virginia last Thursday, propelled by Elizabeth Kooiman's first career hat trick. In that contest, Baylor had a .706 shot accuracy, its highest of the season.
While the Bears lead the league in shot accuracy, TCU leads the conference with 17.23 shots per match. The Horned Frogs are led by Gracie Brian with eight goals on the year, followed by Yazmeen Ryan and Messiah Bright with five goals each.
Oklahoma is led by the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Kaylee Dao, who had a hat trick of her own in the Sooners' overtime victory over Kansas State. Dao (11) and Yuuka Kurasaki (three) are the lone Sooners with multiple goals so far this season.
