Bears dominate second half to clinch first-ever back-to-back trip to round of 16

Raegan Padgett says the 11th-ranked and second-seeded Baylor soccer team is "playing every game like it's our last, because it really could be."
The junior forward made sure Friday's matchup with 13th-ranked Vanderbilt (16-4-1) wouldn't be the Bears' last, netting the game winner in the eighth minute of the second half and assisting on another goal as Baylor (19-5-0) defeated the Commodores, 3-1, Friday night before a crowd of 1,316 at Betty Lou Mays Field.
"We just want to keep playing together, that's our driving force," Padgett said. "We just want to keep playing through the season."
Baylor extended its season with Friday's second-round win in the NCAA tournament and will face 12th-ranked and third-seeded Virginia (16-4-1) at 7 p.m. Sunday in its second straight Sweet 16 and third in program history. The Cavaliers are making their 14th consecutive appearance in the third round after winning a penalty-kick shootout with Texas Tech in the earlier game.
"They're a great team, they're a traditional powerhouse," Baylor coach Paul Jobson said of the Cavaliers, who lost to Florida State in the 2014 Women's Cup final. "They're well-coached and they adapt very, very well to a lot of different systems. Just a fantastic team with some really, really great players. We've got to recover and take care of ourselves and come out and play our game."
By the time Friday night's game started, the Bears were the Big 12's last team standing. Texas Tech and second-seeded West Virginia both lost penalty-kick shootouts, TCU and Kansas were knocked out by Texas A&M and North Carolina, respectfully, and Texas lost a first-round game to Virginia Tech.
"Just knowing that we're one of the last 16 teams left in the country, that's a great feeling," said defender Danielle Hayden, a junior transfer from Kentucky. "It can't get any better than that."
The Bears, who improved to a program-best 12-0 at home, got it started early when freshman Guiliana Cunningham headed in her sixth goal of the season off a corner kick by Ally Henderson just 4:32 into the game.
Vanderbilt, the regular-season SEC champions, answered with Haley Hopkins' 14th goal of the year as she headed in a cross from Leila Azari when the defense failed to clear it out of the back end.
"I felt like after we scored the first goal early in the half, I thought we took a little bit of our foot off the gas, and I thought they started winning first balls," Jobson said. "When we got to halftime, we just kind of refocused everybody and challenged them: Can we sharpen it up? Can we change the momentum a little bit? I thought they really did a great job in the second half, especially."
Hayden, filling in for injured starter Ariel Leach, led a defense that limited the Commodores to just three second-half shots and none on goal.
"In the locker room, Paul talked about if one of us messes up, we're always there, having each other's back," Hayden said. "If I mess up, I knew (Sarah) Norman was back there. If Norman messed up, she knew (Sarah) King was back there. We just put it together and came away with the win."
After starting 11 of the first 12 games, Hayden lost her starting job to Norman, "my best friend on and off the field." She found herself back in the lineup after Leach got hurt in the Big 12 Championship final against West Virginia and has started both of the NCAA tournament games.
"I couldn't walk around with my head down," Hayden said. "I knew (Norman) needed the encouragement, and she's always there for me. So, I just wanted to give the same back to her. And then, just like staying positive, staying ready, because you never know when you're going to be called."
Relentless on the attack, Baylor regained the lead in the eighth minute of the second half. Henderson had a shot blocked, but stayed with it and found Padgett on the back side for the go-ahead goal and her first game-winner of the season.
"I saw it go out to Ally, and I just made a run back post, and I didn't even see it until it got right in front of me and threw my body in front of it," Padgett said. "It's just what our team has done all year, just grind it out, get the scrums in the box and put it away."
Not done, Padgett notched her fifth assist of the season and ninth of her career in the 74th minute when she fed senior Julie James for a left-footed shot from point-blank range that got by Vandy goalkeeper Lauren Demarchi. It was James' ninth goal of the season and 19th of her career.
"We've seen every scenario, so I don't think anything really got in our girls' heads at all," said Jobson, who picked up his 75th career win and moved within three of the school record set by his wife, Marci Jobson. "They were just staying the course, knowing we had 90 minutes we had to play. I don't think they got worried about it once the equalizer was there."
