Sept. 15, 2017 WACO, Texas -- Baylor's cross country teams will hit the road to compete in the Ken Garland Invitational, hosted by North Texas, at Discovery Park in Denton Saturday morning.
The women's 5,000-meter race will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the men's 4-mile race at 9 a.m. Teams competing on Saturday include North Texas, Oklahoma, Cameron and Baylor.
The women's team went 2-0 at the Bear Twilight Invitational in Waco, besting TCU and SMU to open the season. Four of the Bears' top five scoring runners from the last meet will lead the way this weekend (Gabby Satterlee, Brooke Gilmore, Alison-Andrews Paul and Hana Marsheck) while Lindsey Bradley and Anna West will be held out of the meet.
"I think both the men and women are in a good place right now," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We had a great week of training coming off the Bear Twilight Invite. I think both groups are ready to run -- we've got a good group of teams we're up against. This is one more step. We are taking one step at a time to become a better team on both sides."
The men's team is coming off a 2-0 dual-meet record at the season-opening Bear Twilight Invitational and will travel a majority of its roster. Three of the Bears' scoring runners at the Bear Twilight (TJ Sugg, Eric Anderson and Sean McCullough) will run on Saturday while freshman Connor Laktasic and Jeremy Meadows will compete in their first collegiate meet.
Sophomore Devin Meyrer will compete in his first race of 2017 after sitting out at the Bear Twilight Invitational.
"I want my guys to assert themselves. If we're going to call ourselves a good team, then we need to able to run our race the way we want to, and this is our next step towards that," assistant head coach Jon Capron said. "Our upperclassmen should know how, and our younger guys need to learn quickly how to run confidently from the fitness level they are now at. I am excited to see everyone race."
Matt Parham, Henry Huff, Jeff Kirwin and Jackson Vicary will be held out of the meet. Jordan West is a race time decision.
Last season, the men's squad took home the team title while the women placed fourth. Individually, Eric Anderson, Devin Meyrer and Jordan West had top-five finishes. For the women, Hana Marsheck, Aaliyah Miller, Haley Everroad, Isabella Lackner and Amanda Dillon were scoring runners in Denton.
