Conference boasts a combined seven top-10 teams nationally
STILLWATER, Oklahoma – Finally at full strength, the Baylor men and women will compete in the Big 12 Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at Oklahoma State's Greiner Family Cross Country Course.
The women's 6K race begins at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 11 a.m. Four women's teams are ranked in the top 10 nationally (No. 1 BYU, No. 3 West Virginia, No. 7 OSU and No. 10 Colorado), while No. 2 OSU, No. 3 Colorado and fifth-ranked BYU head the men's field.
"The teams have been training well and are ready to have our best races of the season," Baylor coach David Barnett said. "Ruth Kimeli will be our frontrunner, and we have several men and women prepared to have their best Big 12 finishes."
Last time out, the Baylor women were 28th and the men 29th two weeks ago at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station. With Kimeli sitting out, Eastern Kentucky transfer Khadija Ennasri led the women, finishing 48th with a 6K time of 20:27.6, while Jack Sterrett was in his usual No. 1 position for the men with an 8K time of 24:30.2.
Kimeli has recorded a pair of top-10 individual finishes in her only meets this fall, placing ninth at the Southern Showcase and fourth in the Chile Pepper Festival with a career-best 5K time of 16:05.2. Joining Kimeli and Ennasri in the lineup are senior Mackenize Browne, juniors Ella Perry and Rickeisha Simms and sophomores Eva Jacobsen and Rachel Haws.
On the men's side, Sterrett will be joined by seniors Straton Miller, Nolan Keenan and Aiden Ramshaw, junior Caden Biltz and freshman Matthew King.
The Baylor men and women hope to improve on last year's Big 12 finishes, when they were 13th and 14th, respectively. The women are ranked 13th in the NCAA South Central Regional.
The Big 12 Cross Country Championships will be streamed by ESPN+, with live results available at Big 12 XC.
Baylor will compete in the NCAA South Central Regional Nov. 13 back at the Watts Cross Country Course in College Station, with Kimeli trying to advance to the NCAA Championships for the third year in a row. The NCAA Championships will be held Nov. 21 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
