THE RUNDOWN
HUNTSVILLE, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" No. 15/24 Baylor baseball earned a tough 6-5 win at Sam Houston State on Tuesday night at Sanders Stadium. The Bears (12-1) hung on in a game that featured three lead changes as the Bearkats (8-5) threatened in the late innings.
BU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third on a Richard Cunningham walk, error and two-out RBI single by Matt Menard.
After SHSU took the lead with two runs in the fourth, Kameron Esthay answered with a two-out, two-run home run that scored Menard after another two-out single for a 3-1 lead. The Bears then added two more in the sixth on two-out singles by Tucker Cascadden and Steven McLean, an HBP by Cunningham and two-run single by Shea Langeliers.
However, the Bearkats roared back to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Bears wasted no time getting back on top in the seventh. Esthay was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After a Josh Bissonette single and Davis Wendzel walk, Cascadden walked to bring in the winning run.
In the eighth, BU reliever Drew Robertson walked the first two batters, struck out the next two and walked another to load the bases. Troy Montemayor came in to get a grounder to short to end the threat, and worked around a leadoff infield single in the ninth to nail down the win.
Reliever Kyle Ott (1-0) earned the win, giving up a hit and walk with one strikeout in 1.2 innings. Montemayor gathered his fourth save, allowing a hit with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. SHSU reliever Gabriel Sequeira (0-1) took the loss, surrendering a run on one hit in 0.1 innings.
