CLOVIS, Calif. - Baylor track and field athletes Taylor Bennett and Wil London both won their heat in preliminary races Saturday at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.
Bennett blazed to a 200-meter prelim win in 23.27, which was the second-fastest time on the day and .27 seconds faster than anyone in her heat.
London produced a victory in the opening heat of the 400 meters by producing a time of 46.19, which was the second-fastest in qualifying and .64 seconds better than the second-place finisher in his heat. Now both athletes will run Sunday as they look to finish in the top two of the final to qualify for the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, July 19-24.
Running in the first 200-meter prelim, Kiana Horton placed fifth and finished 15th overall with a time of 24.59.
OTHER NOTABLES
- In the finals of the 800 meters, BU signee Aaliyah Miller qualified for the world team by placing second with a time of 2:02.96.
- Running next to London in the 400-meters was another Baylor signee, Maxwell Willis, who finished third in the heat with a time of 47.37 to qualify for the final as well.
- Willis also won his heat (20.74) in the 200 meters to make the Sunday finals in that event too.
- After a fourth-place finish in the 100 meters on Friday, Bennett was chosen to be part of the USATF Junior 4x100-meter relay team at the IAAF World U20 Championships.
WHAT'S NEXT
On Sunday at the meet, London will run in the finals of the 400 meters, which will be held at 6:55 p.m. (8:55 p.m. CT) Sunday and Bennett will take part in the 200-meter final at 7:22 p.m. (9:22 p.m. CT) Sunday.
Meanwhile, Blaine Listach will finally get in on the action. He will compete in the high jump at 5:45 p.m. (7:45 p.m. CT) on Sunday.
