IRVING, Texas - Baylor track and field athletes Taylor Bennett and Wil London were named Big 12 Most Outstanding Freshmen of the Year, as voted on by the league's coaches and announced Friday.

It is the first time that Baylor has won both the men's and women's freshman honors for the indoor season in the same year and the fifth-time it has been accomplished by a Big 12 school.

Bennett has burst on the scene in 2016 and owns the NCAA's 14th-fastest 60-meter time (7.30) and the sixth-fastest 200-meter mark (23.08), qualifying for both events at next week's NCAA Indoor Championships. Those times also rank fifth and third, respectively, on BU's indoor all-time list.

At last weekend's Big 12 Championship, the Spring, Texas, product was third in the 60 meters and second in the 200-meter dash. She also served as the lead-off leg for BU's title-winning 4x400-meter relay. It was the women's relay crew's first Big 12 indoor title since 2006 and qualified the quartet of Bennett, Kiana Hawn, Kiana Horton and Olicia Williams for the NCAA meet with a time of 3:33.47, which was also fourth-fastest in school history.

Bennett is just the second BU female to receive the conference's indoor freshman honor, joining Nicole Jones, who was recognized in 2007.

Meanwhile, London ran a season-best time of 46.24 to place fourth in the 400 meters at the conference meet, which also earned him a spot in the NCAA field. The Waco, Texas, native also runs the opening leg for BU's No. 2 ranked 4x400-meter relay. At the Big 12 meet, the foursome of London, Richard Gary, Caleb Dickson and George Caddick produced the second-best time in school history, 3:04.16, to win the Big 12 event title. The Bears' 4x4 relay is back in the NCAA Indoor Championships for the first time since 2013 and will look to tally All-America status in the event for 27th time in the last 31 years.

London becomes the fifth Baylor male athlete to win the indoor freshman honor, joining Brian Couts (1998), Tre Gardner (1999), Jacob Norman (2006) and Felix Obi (2013).

Both Bennett and London will now compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships, which are scheduled for March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala.
