THE RUNDOWN
AMES, Iowa - Headlined by a trio of event champions, the Baylor track and field team closed out the Big 12 Indoor Championship Saturday at the Lied Recreation Center Saturday.
The Bears saved their best for last as both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams claimed Big 12 event titles.
First the women's crew of Taylor Bennett, Kiana Hawn, Kiana Horton and Olicia Williams produced the fourth-fastest time in school history, 3:33.47, to capture the title. Horton handed the baton to Williams with the lead and the senior proceeded to run a 52.90 anchor leg to secure the crown. It is the first 4x400-meter indoor title for the women since 2006 and the fourth in program history.
To close out the night, the men's quartet of Wil London, Richard Gary, Caleb Dickson and George Caddick ran the second-fastest time in school history and a Big 12 meet record of 3:04.16 to clinch the title for the second-straight year and the 15th time in the 20-year history of the Big 12 Conference. London opened the race with a 45.53 leadoff leg, before Gary and Dickson kept BU in the lead. Caddick closed out the race with a 45.15 anchor to beat Texas by 1.01 seconds. It was the first time that the Bears had used the lineup of London, Gary, Dickson and Caddick for the race in 2016 as regular leg Brandon Moore was suffering from an injury.
Williams claimed BU's only individual event title of the weekend earlier in the day by running a season-best and meet record of 2:04.50 to win the 800-meter crown. The time was the third-best in school history and gave Williams an All-Big 12 honor in the event for a third-straight year. It is the first individual conference title of the senior's career and she became the second Baylor female to win the race joining Lanie Millar (2002).
The two event titles helped the women place sixth with 69.28 points, while the men racked up 44.5 points to be eighth in the team competition. In total, Baylor's women had 15 athletes claim 20 All-Big 12 honors. Meanwhile on the men's side, the Bears had 13 athletes, who carded 16 All-Big 12 accolades.
Paired with her title in the 4x400-meter relay, Bennett, a freshman, was the only Bear to score points in three events. She opened her day by taking third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.37 and then added a runner-up finish in the 200 meters in a personal-best time of 23.08, which ranks third-best in school history.
Outside of the 4x400-meter leg, Hawn also had success as she placed third in the open 400 meters in a personal-best time of 54.13.
Transfer Rachel Toliver shined in the triple jump as she took third with a personal-best leap of 42-5.25 [12.93m]. She carded that jump on her fourth attempt of the competition.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Rhys Phillips and Bryce Grace placed second and third, respectively. Phillips carded his first indoor All-Big 12 honor with a personal-best time of 7.84, while Grace placed in the event for a third straight year with a time of 7.85.
In the shot put, Cion Hicks used the eighth-best throw in school history, 55-0.25 [16.77m], to finish fourth in the event and take home the first indoor All-Big 12 honors of her career. Hicks carded her best throw on her final attempt of the competition.
Before running well on the 4x4 relay, London had placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 46.24. Caddick was bumped coming around the final turn in that race and ended up finishing eighth.
Another leg of the relay, Dickson, earned individual All-Big 12 honors earlier in the day in the 600-yard run by finishing fourth in a personal-best mark of 1:10.88. At the 800-meter distance, Brandon Moore passed two runners in the final stretch to earn a sixth-place showing with a time of 1:52.61.
Sophomore Malik Wilson rebounded from a false start disqualification in the 60 meters to take sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.82
The Bears had a trio of women claim All-Big 12 honors in the high jump. Alex Lord, Jenna Pfeiffer and Kaylyn Schultz all tied for seventh by clearing the opening bar of 5-5.25 [1.66m]. On the men's side in the event, freshman Blaine Listach also tied for seventh to nab All-Big 12 honors with a clearance of personal-best tying 6-8.25 [2.04m].

TOP QUOTE #1
"That was a great way to finish a track meet. To have our men and women both win in the 4x4 was special. Each of those groups just ran unbelievable and it looks like the women did enough to make it to nationals. Overall, we had some bumps along the way this weekend that hurt us in the team race, but it was good to end with momentum as we head to the NCAA meet and then the outdoor season." - head coach Todd Harbour on the meet
STAT OF THE DAY
4 - the number of times Baylor has won the Big 12 title in both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay (2000, 2001, 2006 & 2016)
