THE RUNDOWN
AMES, Iowa - On the first day of action at the Big 12 Indoor Championship, the Baylor track and field team had 11 athletes earn All-Big 12 honors Friday at the Lied Recreation Center.
With the finals of only five events on the men's side and just six events on the women's side concluded, Baylor's men are ninth (two points) and the women are eighth (17 points) in the team standings.
For a second-straight year, junior Annie Rhodes placed second in the pole vault with a final clearance of 13-10.5 [4.23m]. The Waco, Texas, product made her first three bars on her first attempt, but then missed on all three attempts at 14-2.5 [4.33m] to fall to eventual champion Kaitlin Petrillose of Texas for a second-straight year. The BU junior was third in the event in 2014 and second in 2015.
Senior pentathlete Jenna Pfeiffer produced a personal-best point total of 3,915 to be fifth at the meet. It is the third-straight year Pfeiffer has earned All-Big 12 honors in the event and her point tally is third-best in school history. The Bremen, Ind., native, used personal-best marks in the long jump (17-7 [5.36m]) and the 800 meters (2:14.37) and personal-best tying marks in the 60-hurdles (9.07) and the shot put (35-3.25 [10.75m]) to card the PR point total. Pfeiffer was seventh in the event in 2014 and fourth last season.
In the women's 5,000 meters, Maggie Montoya ran in the second position for the majority of the race, but faded down the stretch to finish sixth in 16:29.39. It was the first indoor 5,000-meter race of the junior's career.
To close out the night, both of Baylor's distance medley relay teams placed seventh. The women's squad of Katie Grovatt, Kaitlynn Lindsey, Amanda Dillon and Chelsea Orr ran a time of 11;42.79, while the men's quartet of Matthew Parham, Antwuan Musgrove, Danny Leland and Eric Anderson completed their race in 10:06.67.
Outside of the finals that were contested, the Bears had 10 student-athletes earn 12 entries into the finals of the Big 12 Indoor Championship that will be held Saturday.
In qualifying, the women had two times that ranked as the No. 1 qualifying time at the meet. In the 60-meter dash, freshman Taylor Bennett turned in a 7.30, which was the top time on the day. That mark is also a personal best, the fifth-best in school history and ranked No. 10 in the NCAA for 2016 entering the weekend. Bennett also qualified for the 200-meter final by winning her heat of that event in 23.41.
Meanwhile, Olicia Williams tallied the fastest 800-meter qualifying time as she ran a 2:08.42. BU's only other qualifier on the women's side was Kiana Hawn, who squeaked into the 400-meter final by running a 54.93 to snag the final qualifying spot.
On the men's side, the Bears had seven athletes earn eight entries to the finals. Sophomore Malik Wilson was the only male to qualify in two events as he racked up qualifying spots in both the 60 and 200-meter dashes, running 6.82 and 21.81, respectively.
In the 400 meters, Baylor had a pair of runners qualify for the finals. First, junior George Caddick had the top qualifying in the quartermile with a personal-best of 46.44, which is also currently eighth-best in NCAA for 2016. Freshman Wil London won his heat in the 400 meters as well with a personal-best time of 46.63.
BU also placed a pair of athletes in the 60-meter hurdles with Bryce Grace and Rhys Phillips each earning automatic spots by finishing 1st and 2nd in their heat in 7.84 and 7.88, respectively.
At the 600-yard and 800-meter distances, the men had one runner advance in each event. Both freshman Caleb Dickson (1:11.41) and Brandon Moore (1:52.71) used dives at the finish line to grab a spot in the final of their respective events.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Baylor athletes set a total of 22 personal bests on the day.
- Pfeiffer improved upon her PR point total by 24 points (3,915 from 3,891).
- Pfeiffer had the fastest 800-meter time among the pentathletes, which moved her from sixth to fifth in the competition's final event.
TOP QUOTE #1
"Overall, it was a good day for the men. I think they exceeded expectations. Taylor Bennett was the highlight for the women. Coming in where she was seeded in the 60 meters and then to have the top qualifying time was outstanding. However, we also had some disappointments on the women's side. We felt like we would come out a little better today than we did, so that is tough. We will regroup and have a better day tomorrow." - head coach Todd Harbour on the meet
