Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statementà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Really proud of the team effort and team win. As far as Rico, he wasn't feeling well this morning and started feeling a little bit better, and got woozy again after practice. We'll get him to the doctor's tomorrow. Hopefully we can get him well. We're just really proud of the guys stepping up. We knew how important this game was tonight. Great leadership, and they did a great job keeping everyone focused and a complete team win. Six guys in double figures, 24 assists, and eight turnovers and I think that's the biggest difference in the three losses and this win."
On Gathers' absenceà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I think every game is different. Some games are more physical and more inside battles and half court battles. Other games are more transition games. Last year Rico had 15 (points) and 14 (rebounds) in a win versus Iowa State. They played the same way last year. I think at the end of the day, these guys knew they wanted to win, had great leadership and they all did a good job distributing the ball."
On if there's any relief after the winà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"It's a great team win. We've had the best road record in the Big 12 the last two and three years and second in the last five years. We get upset when we don't win at home."
On switching between zones on defenseà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"We kept switching back and forth. One thing about Iowa State, Oklahoma, and teams that are so efficient in offense, you have to score to beat them, because you're just not going to stop them. I think our two wins we had 94 and 100, so that definitely helps."
Senior Taurean Prince
On the focus and game plan without Gathersà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I wouldn't say we are more focused. I just think we have to try a little harder and know the things that we have to do better when he's out. At Kansas State, we had to try harder on the offense and defense. It's made us strap down and be a little more physical and I think we did the same thing today."
On the difference in overtimeà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Leadership. We said before the game it was a must-win. We did a good job of knowing what sets they wanted to run, especially because they were down six or seven. We wanted to get some threes up and everyone was running people off the line. After three tries on not being able to get a three they went ahead and shot a floater. It's a credit to our defense, our leaders, and our coaching staff for putting us in the right position."
Sophomore Johnathan Motley
On what allowed him to get second-consecutive 27 point effort vs. ISUà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I was able to play a little bit longer. I was able to keep the rhythm. That was really big for me."
On winning rebounding battle without Gathersà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"It was huge. It's a testament to our team and how hard we work."
IOWA STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Steve Prohm
Opening Statement...
"Obviously, it's tough to win on the road. This is a tough loss. We had opportunities. Again, we've got to be a little more disciplined, a little bit smarter down the stretch. We are playing tough. You look at our road losses, three overtime games, and one on a last second shot. We just have to hang because we are doing some good things. It was a disappointing loss and credit to Baylor.
On shot selection...
"There was a couple possessions at the end of regulation, possessions in overtime that we've just got to be smarter. In the zone, you may not have a shot at 25 or at 20, but when we got ball-movement in the zone, we ended up getting good creases, and we just have to stay with that. If we don't have the good first initial look, you've got to look at the second one. You just don't need to force things. We played hard. We put ourselves in position to win on the road.
On tough road losses...
"The frustrating thing is if you look at our road losses in this league, which is a terrific league, we are 3-4 on the road, and we've lost three games in overtime and, we lost one when we had the ball down two and missed the shot. That part's frustrating because we are competing, but we've got to do better. You saw, there's just a couple of possessions where it's like, man, we have to be smarter than that."
On Johnathan Motleyà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I don't know if it is just the size up front. They're just getting it to him in the sweet spot, and he's played well. They had guys tonight. (Ishmail) Wainright was three of four for three. (Johnathan) Motley, he made 10 for 17, but he made a tough couple little turn-arounds and in that high-post area, but he's a physical presence down there and he was tough for us. We went man, we went zone, we tried to guard a little bit each way."
Senior Georges Niang
On the difference in the game...
"I think coach addressed it, execution. We took some bad shots, and turned the ball over, and they had some great ones. That's on nobody but us. We've got to look at ourselves in the mirror. Is this a shot that's going to help us win? Is this a shot that's going that we can get later in the shot clock? We've got to do a better job, and that starts with me. There were some ill-advised shots I took. I probably could have got one more and got other guys open looks. But that's where it starts, execution. That's not on the coach, that's on us. We're basketball players, we've got to make the right play, the simple play that's going to help us win."
On four straight losses to Baylor...
"Baylor's a good team. There's nothing else to it, they're a good team."
Senior Abdel Nader
On the loss...
"I think it would be frustrating for anybody, but at the same time you've got to look at the positives, too. You can't just focus on the negatives. I think coach preaches that to us, and we are just looking forward to getting the next one. We've got two more good road challenges for us left in the regular season."
