THE RUNDOWN
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Baylor's track and field team opened the Tyson Invitational with six top-10 finishes Friday at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Freshman Wil London produced the highest finish of the day in the 400 meters by dropping a personal-best time of 46.73 to win his heat and finish second overall in the event. The Waco, Texas, product was third coming out of the final turn but swung to the outside to pass two competitors in the final 60 meters. Entering the weekend, London's time would have ranked tied for 11th in the NCAA for the current indoor season.
In the invitational section of the 800 meters, Brandon Moore produced a season-best time of 1:51.47 to place sixth.
Baylor's lone athlete to advance from the prelims all the way to the finals on the day was Rhys Phillips in the 60-meter hurdles. He used personal-best times of 7.88 and then 7.85 in the prelims and semifinals, respectively, to reach the finals. In that race, Phillips took seventh in 8.04.
On the women's side in the 400-meter collegiate event, sophomore Kiana Hawn rolled to a personal-best time of 54.42 to be fifth.
In the women's middle distances, the Bears carded two more top-10 finishes as Jessica Purtell was eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.70, while Kate Grovatt tallied a personal-best time of 5:08.80 to be seventh in the mile.
NOTABLES
- Senior Felix Obi had one attempt in the long jump, but fouled and then passed on his next two attempts as he battled a hamstring injury.
- Rhys Phillips' previous personal-best was 7.97, which he set last week at the Charlie Thomas Invitational. At this event a year ago, Phillips set a PR with a time of 8.16.
- George Caddick was disqualified from the invitational 400-meter dash for a lane violation.
HUSKY CLASSIC
In Baylor's lone race in Seattle, Wash., on Friday, Peyton Thomas tallied a personal-best of 16:37.86 in the 5,000 meters to finish 31st. Previously, Thomas' personal-best mark in the event was 17:13.04.
