WACO, Texas - In its fourth weekend of competition, the majority of Baylor's track and field team will be in action at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., while five other women's athletes will travel to the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., Friday and Saturday.
Currently, Baylor's women's team is ranked 17th, while its men's squad is listed as the 32nd best team by the USTFCCCA.
Baylor is scheduled to have 32 athletes in action, including 14 women and 18 men, at the Tyson Invitational. The meet at the Randal Tyson Track Center is slated to get underway at 1 p.m. on Friday with running events and field events starting at 2 p.m. On Saturday, field events begin at 11 a.m., while running action kicks off at noon.
Other teams competing at the Tyson Invitational, include (m/w) Air Force, Alabama (No. 15/--), Arkansas (No. 8/No. 1), Auburn, Clemson (--/No. 25), Florida (No. 1/No. 4), Florida State, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State (No. 25/No. 6), Kentucky (--/No. 12), LSU (No. 4/No. 21), Miami (Fla.) (--/No. 15), Missouri, N.C. State (No. 19/No. 9), Nebraska (No. 16/--), Oklahoma, Oklahoma State (No. 24/No. 22), South Carolina, Southern California (No. 17/No. 7), TCU (No. 9/--), Tennessee (No. 7/No. 14), Texas (No. 5/No. 5), Texas A&M (No. 2/No. 18) and Texas Tech (No. 14/--).
The five other Baylor women's runners, Maggie Montoya, Charlotte Myers, Chelsea Orr, Peyton Thomas and Olicia Williams, will be competing at the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle. Each will be trying to secure a time that will qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships on a historically good track, Dempsey Indoor, for distance races.
On Friday, Thomas will lead things off for the contingent by running the 5,000 meters at 8:05 p.m. CT. Myers and Williams will both run the 800-meter event, but Myers will open things Saturday for the Bears with her heat running at 1:30 p.m. and Williams' at 6:20 p.m. Orr will compete in the mile race at 4:10 p.m., while Montoya will round out BU's action at the meet by taking part in the 3,000 meters at 6:40 p.m. Saturday night. Baylor will be returning to the Husky Classic for the first time since 2014 when former Bears Rachel Johnson (3,000m) and Mariah Kelly (mile) both set school records.
The Baylor athletes who hold all seven of the team's marks that are in the nation's top 20 will be in action in Arkansas.
Following the first three meets of the season, the BU women have two athletes in the top-20 of the nation with both of those national marks in the field events, including Annie Rhodes, who owns the nation's fourth-best pole vault mark by clearing 14-3.5 [4.36m] in the season-opening meet. Besides Rhodes, Cion Hicks set a personal-best in College Station last week with a shot put throw of 55-3 [16.84m] that ranks 11th-best nationally.
The BU men have five marks in the top-20 nationally, including Felix Obi, who owns two top-20 marks with the third-best triple jump, 53-8.25 [16.36m], and the 16th-best long jump of 25-1.25 [7.65m]. On the track, George Caddick's 46.52 in the 400 meters is fifth in the country, while Bryce Grace is 13th in the 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 7.79. BU's 4x400-meter relay of Wil London, Richard Gary, Brandon Moore and Caddick ranks third-best in the land with a time of 3:05.90.
During the 2015 Tyson Invitational, former Bear Trayvon Bromell captured the 200-meter crown in 20.69 for BU's lone event win at the meet.
Last time out, Baylor's women placed fourth and the men were third at the Charlie Thomas Invitational in College Station, Texas. BU had one event winner, Hicks in the shot put on the women's side, while the men had event winners in the 400 meters, 4x400-meter relay, 60-meter hurdles and long jump.
Following the meets in Fayetteville and Seattle, Baylor will send a small group of athletes to the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind., for a meet on Saturday, Feb. 20.
