IRVING, Texas - Baylor track and field junior George Caddick was named the Big 12 Male Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
The Manchester, United Kingdom, native, made his season debut in the 400 meters count by running what was at the time the No. 1 mark in the nation for the current indoor season.
Caddick captured the Rod McCravy Memorial 400-meter event title Saturday in Lexington, Ky., with a personal-best tying time of 46.54. The mark ended up being the second-fastest time in the country for the year and is the fastest quartermile in the Big 12.
Caddick also ran the anchor leg for Baylor 4x400-meter relay along with Wil London, Richard Gary and Brandon Moore. As the Bears went toe-to-toe with Florida, finishing only .33 seconds behind the Gators with a time of 3:05.90. The mark is currently third best in the nation and the best time in the Big 12. It is also the fastest time turned in by a BU quartet since 2011 when Whitney Prevost, Zwede Hewitt, Drew Seale and Marcus Boyd placed second at the NCAA Championships in 3:05.42.
This is the first time Caddick has received recognition from the league.
Caddick is the first BU male athlete to win the league's indoor weekly honor since Felix Obi was recognized on Jan. 29, 2014. In total, BU has now had seven male athletes win the award since 2002. Caddick joins Jeremy Wariner, Darold Williamson, Jacob Norman, Reggie Witherspoon, Quentin Iglehart-Summers and Obi, who all won the honor once.
