THE RUNDOWN
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Baylor (18-28, 7-13) earned a 6-3 win to even the series against Kansas (20-27, 7-10) Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark. The Bears received an outstanding effort on the mound by starter Nick Lewis.

Lewis was spotted an early 1-0 lead after a second-inning, two-out RBI single by Justin Arrington. Lewis then settled in and retired 11 in a row. In the meantime, the Bears gave Lewis another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Kameron Esthay.

Kansas finally got to Lewis in the seventh as Owen Taylor launched a two-out, solo home run to make it a 2-1 Baylor lead. The Bears immediately countered by bringing in Brad Kuntz, and he ended the seventh with a looking strikeout.

The Bears then added insurance runs in the eighth. Jonathan Ducoff led off with a single. After a sac bunt moved Ducoff to second, Adam Toth singled and a run scored on the next play as Duncan Wendel hit a sac fly. Following an Esthay single, Mitch Price singled to score another run and give BU a 4-1 edge.

The Jayhawks rallied in the bottom of the eighth as Kuntz gave up a one-out single and two-out single before giving way to Sean Spicer in a 2-0 count that ended up being a walk to load the bases. Spicer then walked in a run before getting a grounder to first to end the rally.

BU answered in the ninth with a big two-out, two-run double by Toth that scored Steven McLean after a double and Logan Brown after an infield single. KU rallied in its half of the ninth but it wasn't enough as the Jayhawks were only able to get one run on a two-out double by Connor McKay.

Lewis (2-2) earned the win after giving up the one run on four hits and one walk with no strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Spicer gathered his sixth save as he surrendered one run on two hits and one walk in 1.1 innings. KU starter Drew Morovick (4-4) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 7.1 innings.

"[Nick Lewis] gave us a good start. He threw a ton of fastballs and located them well. He walked one but pounded the strike zone and we made plays behind him. He collected himself and pitched a good ball game." - Baylor head coach Steve Smith
