May 19, 2015 WACO, Texas - Three Baylor men's tennis players, Julian Lenz, Tony Lupieri and Max Tchoutakian will open play in the NCAA Singles Championship Wednesday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Meanwhile, Lenz and partner Diego Galeano will start their run in the NCAA Doubles Championships on Thursday.
Lenz, the event's No. 2 seed, will take on Duke's Jason Tahir at 12:30 p.m. to kick off Baylor's run in the 64-man singles bracket. As a junior, Lenz has racked up a 25-8 record overall and a 15-5 mark in dual-match action. The Giessen, Germany, native is currently ranked No. 2 in the country and his opponent, Tahir, is ranked No. 41 for the Blue Devils. Lenz will be participating in his third straight NCAA Singles Championship. He has lost in the first round in the previous two trips.
Lupieri, a senior from Zagreb, Croatia, has been ranked in the ITA top 35 for the whole season, but he currently resides at No. 35, after tallying a 16-13 singles record overall and a 9-11 mark in dual-match play. He will face Denver's Henry Craig at 2 p.m. Craig is the country's 112th-ranked player.
Rounding out BU's singles participants is first-year Bear Max Tchoutakian. The sophomore from Marseille, France, is 17-11 on the year and 15-10 in dual-match play. He will face Virginia's Mitchell Frank at 4 p.m. Tchoutakian is ranked No. 58, while Frank is No. 20.
In doubles action in the round of 32, Galeano and Lenz will face Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant of Texas A&M Thursday. The BU duo was ranked No. 8 in the latest ITA listings. Galeano and Lenz were 23-2 on the year and have won 20 of their last 21 matches. In the final two matches of the season, the duo knocked off the country's No. 2 and No. 3-ranked pairings. Adams and Vinsant are No. 10 in the country.
