THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - Baylor (20-28) earned a 4-3 win over UTSA (30-22) Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Roadrunners tied the game with a pair of runs in the seventh but the Bears answered with the game-winning run in the bottom half.
UTSA started the game with a brief 1-0 lead after a two-out RBI single by John Bormann in the third. But the Bears countered in the bottom half with a manufactured run. With two outs, Duncan Wendel walked and Kameron Esthay singled to put Wendel at third base. Mitch Price then hit a routine grounder to third that was bobbled to let all runners advance, tying the game.
Baylor scored in each of the next two innings to take command. In the fourth, Jonathan Ducoff hit an RBI double to score Darryn Sheppard after a leadoff single. In the fifth, Sheppard drew a bases-loaded walk.
In the UTSA seventh, a one-out error and single set up a first and third situation for the Roadrunners. Pinch-hitter Skyler Valentine hit a single to cut Baylor's lead to 3-2. Reliever Daniel Castano then made a stellar spinning stop and throw on a grounder hit back to him to cut down a runner at home. Following a hit batter and RBI single by Bormann, Castano got a strikeout to end the rally with the game tied, 3-3.
In the Baylor seventh, Esthay led off with a walk and Matt Menard singled to push Esthay to third with one out. Sheppard again delivered, this time with a grounder to the left side that was dropped at second base as UTSA tried to turn two but ended up with no outs on the play.
Brad Kuntz started the eighth for Baylor on the mound and worked himself into and out of a jam. With one out and runners on second and third, the Bears went with an intentional walk to set up a bases loaded situation for UTSA's No. 9 spot. Kuntz was able to strikeout Logan Kinder before getting Jesse Baker, UTSA's leader in batting average, home runs and RBI, to fly out to left field to end UTSA's last real threat.
Castano (4-5) picked up the win as he allowed two unearned runs on five hits with two strikeouts in two innings. Sean Spicer earned his seventh save with a perfect ninth and two strikeouts. UTSA reliever Patrick Herbelin (2-4) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"We competed well at the plate. The pitching was the thing that kind of won us this game. The guys competed, dodged some bullets and made some huge pitches. [Brad] Kuntz made some big pitches tonight. I put him in a bind by intentionally walking a guy, but Brad made that decision look good and then got the next guy out, who is arguably their best player." - Baylor head coach Steve Smith
