THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - Baylor (17-24, 6-10) earned a 4-1 win in the series opener against Kansas State (18-22, 5-11) Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark as the teams resumed play from Friday night's suspended game.
The Bears had a 3-0 lead thanks to a two-run, two-out triple by Matt Menard in the fourth and RBI two-out single by Adam Toth in the fifth.
The Wildcats answered with a run in the sixth on a two-out double by Steve Serratore, and then had their first two runners reach in the seventh off BU starter Drew Tolson but the game was suspended at that point.
Over 18 hours later, the teams resumed play with BU reliever Sean Spicer on the mound. He made a nice play on a sacrifice bunt attempt to get a force at third against his first batter. After hitting the next batter to load the bases, Spicer fanned the next two to escape unscathed.
BU added an insurance run in the seventh on a two-out RBI single from Toth again, and Spicer easily closed out the game.
Tolson (3-6), who retired the first 10 batters he faced, earned the win after giving up one run on six hits and two walks with one strikeout in six-plus innings. Spicer picked up his fifth save, tossing three perfect frames with three strikeouts. KSU starter Colton Kalmus (1-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
