THE RUNDOWN
HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Baylor (7-12) topped Sam Houston State (9-12) 4-3 in 10 innings Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium. The Bears received stellar relief efforts from Sean Spicer and Daniel Castano to earn the win.
BU opened the game with a 2-0 lead after two as Cameron Miller had an RBI single in the first and West Tunnell did the same in the second. Baylor starter Theron Kay was cruising through three until command issues helped SHSU get on the board in the fourth after a leadoff walk and two-out RBI single by Collin Yelich.
The game appeared to take a turn for the worst in the sixth after Hunter Courson blasted a two-run homer off reliever Joe Kirkland for a 3-2 Bearkats lead. However, the Bears responded right away in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
Logan Brown doubled with one out to get the frame started and Duncan Wendel followed with a sharp single off the short stop's glove to put runners at first and third. Mitch Price then delivered an RBI groundout to knot the game, 3-3.
Sean Spicer took over for Kirkland, retired seven straight batters at one point, and bridged the gap to Daniel Castano, who entered the game in the bottom of the ninth with one out and runners on first and second. Castano struck out his first batter looking and induced a ground out to escape the threat.
In the top of the 10th, Aaron Dodson led off with a single. Jonathan Ducoff replaced Dodson as a pinch runner and immediately stole second base and moved to third on an errant throw by the catcher. After an out and infield single by Levi Gilcrease to put runners at first and third, Matt Menard drove in the go-ahead run on an infield single to short.
Castano (1-3) held firm in the bottom half to shut the door and pick up the win, allowing just a hit with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings. SHSU reliever Jordan Church (0-1) took the loss after giving up a run on one hit and walk with one strikeout in two innings.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"We had to piece it together - I think it's one of the toughest things to do is win an extra innings game on the road. Maybe this will kind of jump start us a little bit. They didn't give us a lot, we had to earn it. We stole some bags on them and forced the issue a little bit on them." - Baylor head coach Steve Smith
