THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - No. 21 Baylor was doomed by two big innings in the fourth and ninth as Dallas Baptist earned a 9-6 win Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Patriots (4-0) took advantage of eight walks issued by the Bears (3-1) in handing BU its first loss of the season.
The control problems started right away in the first inning as Austin Stone allowed two runs on three walks and two wild pitches. Stone settled in for a quick 1-2-3 second inning and then got help from the Baylor bats.
Hayden Ross tied the game up in the second with a two-out, two-run single. With Darryn Sheppard up and Steven McLean on third and Ross on first, the Bears pulled off a rare double steal to take a 3-2 lead.
DBU answered in the fourth with four runs on three walks. Nash Knight and Drew Turbin each had two-run hits to give the Patriots a 6-3 lead. But in the bottom half, Baylor rallied to tie the game thanks to some wildness from the DBU pitchers.
Kameron Esthay started the inning with an HBP to reach, and an out later, McLean singled. Ross followed with another single to load the bases. Then Sheppard, Logan Brown and Cameron Miller all took RBI HBPs in consecutive order to tie the game.
The game remained tied until the ninth, as Troy Montemayor hit Knight and walked Turbin with one out. BU brought in Sean Spicer to try to limit the damage but a wild pitch and RBI single by Camden Duzenack gave DBU the go-ahead run. A wild pitch and passed ball then added two insurance runs for the Patriots and the Bears were unable to answer in the bottom half.
Chance Adams (2-0) earned the win in relief for DBU, pitching a scoreless, hitless 1.2 innings with one strikeout. Brandon Koch notched his first save after giving up a hit and walk with two strikeouts in the ninth. Montemayor (0-1) took the loss for BU despite a strong outing, allowing two runs on one hit and walk with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

"It's just baseball. It happens a lot early on in the year. It was just kind of an ugly game from the pitcher's perspective, on both sides to some degree, but for sure on our side. There's not a lot you can say about it." - BU head coach Steve Smith
