Nov. 6, 2015 WACO, Texas - Team Green took game one of Baylor baseball's Green-Gold World Series Friday night at Baylor Ballpark, 4-3. The best-of-five series opener lived up to the expected pitcher's duel between Green's Drew Tolson and Gold's Joe Heineman.
Both pitchers looked strong in the opening frames as neither team was able to generate anything offensively for the first two innings. However, in the third inning Gold's bottom of the order was able to get a rally started, led by freshman Kai Gomez, who was hit by a pitch. Gold kept it rolling with a little help from an error by Green's defense, and capped it off by an RBI single from Joe Sabatini followed by an RBI double from Darryn Sheppard, staking Gold out to a three-run lead.
That lead held up as Heineman continued to throw well. Kody Hessemer took over after Heineman and seemed to be following his lead as he looked to shut Green out of the game. However, Green saved some magic in their bats for the top of the ninth inning.
West Tunnell led off the inning for Green with a sharp single, and Kameron Esthay quickly followed with a two-run homer to right field to make it a 3-2 Gold lead with no outs. The next hitter, Cameron Miller, kept the line going as he struck a solid single. After a sacrifice bunt by Steven McLean, Richard Cunningham launched a ball into the gap, scoring Miller and drawing his team equal. Cunningham ended up at third with a triple, and an error on a hard-hit ball to third base by Brady Dorn brought in the go ahead run for the home team Green.
Cody Moos got the win in relief for Green, while Andrew McInvale came in for the save. Both starting pitchers threw the ball very well, but both came away with no decisions. Sabatini led the offense for Gold with two hits and an RBI, while Miller went 3-for-4 and scored the tying run for Green.
Game two of the series will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. CT at Baylor Ballpark. The pitching matchup for tomorrow will feature Green's Daniel Castano against Gold's Nick Lewis. The whole series is free and open to the public.
