Nov. 17, 2015 WACO, Texas - Gold salvaged the finale of Baylor baseball's Green-Gold World Series Tuesday evening at Baylor Ballpark. After losing the first four games of the event, Gold was able to rally for an easy 5-0 win.
Gold struck quickly in the bottom of the first inning off Green's Cody Moos as Levi Gilcrease led off the game with a walk and Matt Menard quickly drove him in with a double. Joe Sabatini followed with an RBI double of his own to stake Gold out to a 2-0 lead.
After scoring a run in the fourth, Gold added two more in the bottom of the sixth. Sabatini connected for his second double of the game to lead the inning off, and Darryn Sheppard drove him in with another double. Sheppard later scored on an RBI single from Jonathan Ducoff, giving Gold a 5-0 lead.
The five-run edge was more than enough for Gold's pitching as Joe Heineman started the ball game and threw four scoreless innings. Kody Hessemer and Theron Kay each threw two shutout innings, and Tyler Shumpert finished the game with one scoreless frame. Heineman earned the win for Gold while Moos took the loss for Green, and Andrew McInvale threw two shutout innings for Green.
Offensively, Sabatini led the way for Gold by going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run scored and an RBI. For Green, Richard Cunningham also went 2-for-4 with two doubles.
Green's Kameron Esthay was named series MVP, going 8-for-17 (.470) at the plate. He hit a clutch home run in game one of the series and went on to score seven runs while leading Green to a dominant 4-1 series victory.
The conclusion of the series also marked the end of fall practices for the Bears as they will resume practices again in the spring semester with preseason camp. First pitch of the 2016 season and beginning of the Steve Rodriguez era is set for Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m. CT against Washington at Baylor Ballpark.
