WACO, Texas - National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) President Dr. Renee Baumgartner and Baylor Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator Nancy Post have announced that Baylor will host the 2016 NCATA National Championships on April 16-19, 2016.
"We are excited to return to Waco. Baylor President and Chancellor Ken Starr, Vice President and Athletics Director Ian McCaw and Baylor are great stewards of our sport and the community support will make for a truly special national tournament," said Baumgartner.
"Baylor is excited to host the 2016 NCATA National Championship. Coming off a tremendous season where we saw our team improve with each meet and our fan base grow in numbers and excitement about this new sport, we believe that Baylor Nation can help bring greater exposure for A&T and this Championship to not only the Greater Waco area but throughout Texas and nationally," said Post.
The 2016 NCATA Championship marks the second time Baylor has hosted the event, as the Bears were the tournament hosts in 2012. Baylor, the reigning national champion, is the next NCATA member institution in line to showcase the best in A&T after hosting bids by Oregon (2011), Quinnipiac (2013), Azusa Pacific University (2014) and Fairmont State University (2015).
Following the format established by the NCATA, Saturday, April 16 will feature the event final championships. The event finals will be comprised of the top four qualifying individuals or groups in each event of A&T, with the winners earning National Champion honors.
The eight-team championship bracket kicks off on Sunday, April 17, as four meets will take place to determine who will advance to the semifinals. The NCATA National Champion will be crowned Tuesday evening after a pair of semifinals on Monday.
Last season, under first-year head coach Felecia Mulkey, Baylor won its first NCATA national championship, defeating four-time and defending national champion Oregon, 286.690-282.870.
