WACO, Texas - The ninth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team will try to continue its early 2015 success against No. 5 Virginia Saturday at 6 p.m. CT at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
"Virginia has a heck of a team," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "They proved that to us last season when they took us to the woodshed. We have a lot of respect for their program. Anytime you play top-five teams in back-to-back matches, it's an opportunity show your consistency as a competitor. We really need to trust and continue to embrace the process. When we do that we are a very good team."
This will be the second match in a row that the Lady Bears have faced the fifth-ranked team in the country. Baylor upset then-No. 5 Georgia 4-3 in the first match of the season on Sunday.
Baylor boasts several ranked singles players, including No. 49 Blair Shankle, No. 72 Ema Burgic, No. 73 Kelley Anderson and No. 101 Rachel James-Baker. Shankle and Burgic, along with junior Kiah Generette and freshman Leolia JeanJean, posted singles victories against Georgia.
Virginia enters the match with a record of 2-0 after wins over VCU and No. 42 Utah. The Cavaliers are led by the top-ranked singles player in the country, Julia Elbaba. UVA has two others ranked players, including No. 16 Stephanie Nauta and No. 42 Danielle Collins. Meanwhile in doubles, Skylar Morton and Cassie Mercer pair together to be the country's No. 11 duo and Elbaba and Nauta are ranked No. 22 as a tandem.
Baylor leads the all-time series against Virginia, 3-2. The last time the teams met was in the round of 16 of the NCAA Championships last year where the Cavaliers knocked the Lady Bears out with a score of 4-1. Virginia went on to lose in the quarterfinals to Stanford. BU has won both of the matches when the series is played in Waco, including a 6-1 victory in 2008 and a 4-3 win in 2013.
