THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Four Baylor men's tennis players made the Sherwood Collegiate Cup quarterfinals by winning two singles matches each at the Sherwood Country Club Friday.
In a revamped 32-man singles draw that bumped junior Julian Lenz up to the event's No. 1 seed, the Bears flourished. Lenz bested UCLA's Michael Guzman, 6-3, 6-1 to open the day and then battled past No. 104 Max DeVroome of USC, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals.
BU's other ranked singles participant, No. 121 Felipe Rios, started his day with a three-set victory over Stanford's Macek Romanowicz, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. The Baylor junior then got past Thibault Forget of Stanford in another three-set triumph, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Playing his first collegiate matches, newcomer Max Tchoutakian had possibly the most impressive day. The sophomore beat UCLA's Joseph DiGuilio, 6-2, 6-2, and then upset 25th-ranked Thomas Fawcett, 7-5, 6-3, for the best win of the day.
Returning to collegiate action after taking the fall semester off, senior Mate Zsiga slipped past USC's Eric Johnson in first-round action 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. To reach the quarterfinals, Zsiga pulled a 6-3, 6-0 upset of 90th-ranked Austin Rapp from UCLA.
Those four Bears combined for eight of Baylor's 11 wins on the day, but each of BU's other three players at the tournament also picked up one win each.
Vince Schneider opened with a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set win over Stanford's Anthony Tsodikov, before falling to USC's 68th-ranked Roberto Quiroz in the second round.
Newcomer Juan Benitez and senior Diego Galeano both dropped opening round matches, but bounced back to win in the consolation bracket.
