Sept. 8, 2014 WACO, Texas - Junior Julian Lenz, ranked No. 1 in the country, highlights a trio of Baylor men's tennis players listed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason singles rankings released on Monday.
Lenz is joined by seniors Diego Galeano and Tony Lupieri, who are ranked at No. 26 and No. 112, respectively.
Lenz enjoyed the best season of any Baylor player a year ago with a 35-8 record and a 24-4 mark in dual-match play. He was named the ITA National Player to Watch and a member of the All-Big 12 singles team. Lenz was 15-3 for the Bears at the No. 1 spot and earned a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship.
Lenz concluded last season ranked No. 4 in the ITA rankings. Lenz is the first Baylor men's tennis player to ever start the season at No. 1 since the ITA started keeping week-by-week rankings history in 2008. Denes Lukacs was ranked No. 2 to start the 2008 season.
Galeano posted a 29-13 record last season and a 16-8 mark in dual-match play en route to claiming All-Big 12 singles honors. He went 15-5 in the No. 3 spot for the Bears and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship. Galeano finished the season last year sitting in the No. 40 spot of the ITA rankings.
Lupieri tallied a 31-9 record on the year in 2013-14 and a 17-5 mark in dual-match play in the No. 4 position for the Bears. He was unranked at the end of last season.
All three of those players were selected to take part in the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships, which runs Sept. 27-Oct. 6 in Tulsa, Okla. Lenz and Galeano are part of the singles main draw, while Lupieri is in the qualifying draw. That trio of Bears will be joined by teammates Felipe Rios (qualifying) and Vincent Schneider (pre-qualifying) at the event. Galeano and Lenz will team together to take part in the event's qualifying doubles draw.
