Sept. 11, 2014 OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The Baylor men's golf team is headed to the ninth-annual Fighting Illini Invitational, which is hosted by Illinois at the Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields. Ill.
The three-day, 54-hole event will be played on the par-70, 7,142-yard Olympia Fields North Course, which is noted for hosting two US Open Championships and two PGA Championships, and it will also be the site of the 2015 US Amateur Championship. Baylor is one of 15 teams in the field including, Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida State, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech.
"I am really excited about the opportunity to compete tomorrow," head coach Mike McGraw said. "Olympia Fields is a great golf course. It's probably the best we will see all year long in college golf. We are really excited about that and doing the best we can tomorrow, and we will see how that turns out."
Baylor opened the 2014-15 season with a tournament championship at the Gopher Invitational last weekend. All five Baylor players finished among the top-30 individuals, including three top-10 individuals, led by Kyle Jones taking third place.
The Bears return with the same lineup for the second week in a row, led by four seniors with Jones, Niclas Mansson, Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen and Filippo Zucchetti and lone junior Andreas Gjesteby.
Friday's first round tee times for the Bears begin at 9 a.m. CT. Baylor is paired with Oklahoma State and Florida State, and the Bears will tee off on the first hole with Gjesteby up first, followed by Mansson, Zucchetti, Bjerch-Andresen and Jones in nine-minute intervals, respectively.
