ARLINGTON, Texas - A solid performance from the back of the batting order guided Baylor to a 6-4 win over UT Arlington on Tuesday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark. The win gave the Bears (25-20) their season-best fifth in a row and moved them to a season high five games over .500.

Baylor's No. 6-9 hitters played a huge role in beating the Mavericks (24-21) as they combined to go 8-for-12 with four RBI and runs scored. Adam Toth was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI as he tied a career high in hits. Duncan Wendel drove in a pair of runs. Steve DalPorto also tied a career high in hits, going 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. Brett Doe went 2-for-4 with a run.

"That's what you hope to build as the season goes on," BU Associate Head Coach Steve Johnigan said of the back of the order. "You want one through nine to contribute because it's hard for just two, three, four guys to do it. It's very encouraging for those guys to come off this weekend and then swing it well going into Lawrence this weekend with a positive feeling. It's nothing but good for our team."

After going down 2-0 in the first inning, DalPorto and Doe jump-started the third inning with back-to-back singles. Following a sacrifice bunt by Lawton Langford, Cal Towey scored a run on a sacrifice fly and Nathan Orf tied the game on a double.

Toth then took over at the plate and on the base paths. He started the fourth with a one-out double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Wendel ground out to give Baylor a 3-2 lead. In the sixth, he singled with two outs, stole second and moved to third on a bad throw from behind the plate, and scored on another Wendel grounder. In the eighth, he added an insurance run on a one-out RBI single.

On the mound, the Bears navigated around a season-high-tying 14 walks with a few big defensive plays and strikeouts. In the second, Sean Spicer entered the game for starter Sterling Wynn with one out and erased two walks with a double play grounder. He did the same to end the third en route to earning the win (3-2) on 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

"[Getting a win] is the bottom line at the end of the day and the walks were one of those things that snow-balled in the wrong direction," said Johnigan. "But that's part of baseball and the good teams overcome those. Tonight, we were able to do that."

With two walks aboard in the sixth, Doug Ashby entered the game and racked up two huge strikeouts before getting a fly out to end the threat. Ashby also used strikeouts to strand a pair of runners in the seventh and eighth as he worked a career-high three innings.

The game started to look in doubt in the bottom of the ninth after Josh Michalec allowed two runs and walked the bases loaded with two outs. But for the third straight game, Crayton Bare came on to get the save (4), serving up a strikeout to leave the winning run at first base.

UTA starter John Beck (1-5) took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits and a walk with one strikeout in five innings.

After a 12-5 month of April, Baylor travels to Lawrence, Kan., this weekend for a three-game set against Kansas. The series is one of two Big 12 series left in the regular season.
