WACO, Texas - The 41st-ranked Baylor men's tennis team hosts No. 58 Maryland at the Hurd Tennis Center on Tuesday, March 6 at 2 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the two teams and marks Baylor's eighth ranked opponent of the season.
Baylor , 7-5 on the season, is coming off three straight wins last week with home victories over SMU, St. Edward's and Laredo CC. The Terps, coached by former Baylor assistant Kyle Spencer, are 3-7 on the season after a loss at No. 26 Notre Dame on Sunday.
Baylor is led on the season by 28th-ranked freshman Mate Zsiga's 22-4 season mark; he is 8-1 in dual match play, his only loss coming to then-29th-ranked Ryan Thacher of Stanford. Junior Roberto Maytin, BU's other ranked singles player at No. 125, owns the team's second-best singles record at 17-8, including a 7-3 dual match record. Maytin and freshman Marko Krickovic are ranked No. 26 in doubles with a 5-2 record, but haven't played dual match competition together yet. Maytin and Zsiga, the Bears' top doubles team, are 7-3 in dual-match play while Robert Verzaal and Krickovic, playing at the No. 2 spot, are 7-2 in spring matches.
Spencer's Maryland squad won the doubles point at Notre Dame but couldn't maintain the momentum in singles play as Notre Dame knocked off the Terps 5-2. Like the Bears, Maryland has two ranked singles players in Maros Horny and Vlad Stefan. Horny, a transfer from Baylor, is rated No. 91 and plays at No. 1 for the Terps while Stefan is ranked No. 122. Horny and his doubles partner, John Collins, are ranked No. 36 nationally.
