WACO, Texas - Baylor rallied from an early 6-0 deficit to cut Lamar's lead to one, but the Bears left the potential tying run on second base in the ninth inning of an 8-7 loss on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

Lamar (4-6) jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Bears stepped to the plate. Most of the damage was done with two outs in the first, as Cameron Campbell knocked a two-run triple and Thomas Henk followed with a two-run homer down the left-field line against Baylor starting pitcher Brad Kuntz.

"There are a lot of parts to (the first inning) that bother me in terms of how it was going," head coach Steve Smith said. "But really, if we just play the game the rest of the way, we come back. The guys played hard on the offense. We didn't get a lot of hits, and we couldn't get a big hit, but we got a bunch of walks. Hopefully we can mature some and just play the game a little cleaner. We just didn't play it very cleanly."

Kuntz (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Baylor's bullpen kept the Bears in the game with 6.2 innings pitched and only three runs allowed, but a pair of miscues on the mound proved costly.

Lamar plated a run on a balk in the sixth inning when Miles Landry dropped the ball as he was delivering a pitch, and the Cardinals added an insurance run in the eighth when Crayton Bare threw a wild pitch to allow Jude Vidrine to score from third.

LU starter Shane Hamaker (1-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Jeff Abt moved from left field to the mound to record the final out and notch his first save of the season.

Baylor plated two runs in the fifth, two more in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth, but the Bears were unable to scratch across one more in the ninth to keep the game going.

Vernon Maxwell retired the first two batters in the ninth, but Max Muncy was hit by a pitch and Josh Ludy drew a walk, forcing the Cardinals to bring Abt to the mound. Logan Vick worked the count to 2-2, but Abt caught him looking at a breaking ball for a called strike three to end the game.

Baylor batters combined to draw 10 walks in the game with only four strikeouts. Ludy, Vick and Lawton Langford drew two walks apiece, while Michael Howard went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs, two RBI and one walk.

"Michael Howard plays the game," Smith said. "Michael Howard goes first to third on a swinging bunt in the infield. I don't think I can remember in 18 years seeing anybody do it, much less somebody that just showed up. But some guys know how to play, they've played baseball and they just play."

Henk went 3-for-4 and Vidrine and David Harris had two hits each to lead Lamar at the plate. Relievers Ben Coram and Maxwell combined to allow five runs on four hits with five walks in 3.2 innings, but Abt retired the only batter he faced to keep the Cardinals in front.

The Bears return to action with five more games this week. Baylor hits the road to take on TCU at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, then returns home to host Michigan State for $1 hot dog night at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday. Memphis comes to Baylor Ballpark for a three-game series over the weekend, with first pitch in Friday's series opener scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
