WACO, Texas - Baylor men's tennis players Roberto Maytin and Mate Zsiga advanced to the singles semifinals and Maytin and Marko Krickovic advanced to the doubles finals in the 11th-annual Baylor-HEB Invitational at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Action began in the round of 16 on Saturday morning with four Bears competing. Maytin, Zsiga and Lars Behlen were all winners but Krickovic was eliminated by Carlin Murray of ULL. In Saturday afternoon's quarterfinal play, Maytin and Zsiga each posted wins, Zsiga, the tournament's No. 8 seed, defeated top-seeded Costin Paval of Oklahoma in straight sets. Lars Behlen was the Bears' lone loser, falling to Oklahoma's Dane Webb.
Two rounds of doubles were contested on Saturday as well, round of 16 and quarterfinals. Baylor's top-seeded tandem of Krickovic and Maytin advanced to the tournament finals by posting impressive wins over Alex Ferrero/Michel Hukwo of Portland, 8-6, and fourth-seeded Guillermo Alcorta and Lawrence Formentera of Oklahoma, 8-4.
On Sunday in semifinal play, at the top of the singles bracket, Zsiga will take on Oklahoma's Webb while on the lower half of the bracket Maytin will face off against Oklahoma's Guillermo Alcorta. Both matches are slated to begin at 10 a.m. Winners will play for the tournament singles championship at 1:30 p.m.
Doubles championship action begins at noon on Sunday with Krickovic and Matyin matching up against second-seeded Marc Bruche and Will Vasos of Iowa.
